- When I:
- Solomon here records the result of his perplexing inquiries into the affairs of men, and the purposes, providence, and works of God. And when he examined with great attention and diligence into the works of God, he found he could neither comprehend nor explain them; and was persuaded, that no application or capacity would enable a man to fathom the depth of the Divine dispensations in this lower world. How vain, then, are all cavils against Divine providence; when we can neither understand, nor comprehend it! "All¹ this¹ have I seen,ª° and appliedª°¹ my heartª unto every¹ workª that¹ is doneª° under¹ the sun:ª [there is] a timeª wherein¹ one manª ruleth²° over¹ another¹ to his own hurt.ª" {Ecc 8:9} + "For¹ he knowethª° not¹ that¹ which shall be:¹¹ for¹ who¹ can tellª° him when¹ it shall be?¹" {Ecc 8:7} + "I¹ appliedª° mine heartª to know,ª° and to search,ª° and to seek outª° wisdom,ª and the reasonª [of things], and to knowª° the wickednessª of folly,ª even of foolishnessª [and] madness:ª" {Ecc 7:25}
