- etc. Heb. musical instrument and instruments, "Moreover Davidª and the captainsª of the hostª separatedª° to the serviceª of the sonsª of Asaph,ª and of Heman,ª and of Jeduthun,ª who should prophesyª°°² with harps,ª with psalteries,ª and with cymbals:ª and the numberª of the workmenª²¹ according to their serviceª was:¹" {1Ch 25:1} + "All¹ these¹ [were] under¹ the handsª of their fatherª for songª [in] the houseª of the LORD,ª with cymbals,ª psalteries,ª and harps,ª for the serviceª of the houseª of God,ª according to¹ the king'sª orderª to Asaph,ª Jeduthun,ª and Heman.ª" {1Ch 25:6} + "They send forthª° their little onesª like a flock,ª and their childrenª dance.ª° ... They takeª° the timbrelª and harp,ª and rejoiceª° at the soundª of the organ.ª" {Job 21:11-12} + "Praiseª° him with the soundª of the trumpet:ª praiseª° him with the psalteryª and harp.ª ... Praiseª° him upon the loudª cymbals:ª praiseª° him upon the high soundingª cymbals.ª" {Psa 150:3-5} + "[That] at what¹ timeª ye hearª° the soundª of the cornet,ª flute,ª harp,ª° sackbut,ª psaltery,ª dulcimer,ª and allª kindsª of musick,ª ye fall downª° and worshipª° the goldenª imageª that¹ Nebuchadnezzarª the kingª hath set up:ª°" {Dan 3:5} + "Thereforeªª¹ at that time,ª whenª allª the peopleª heardª° the soundª of the cornet,ª flute,ª harp,ª° sackbut,ª psaltery,ª and allª kindsª of musick,ª allª the people,ª the nations,ª and the languages,ª fell downª° [and] worshippedª° the goldenª imageª that¹ Nebuchadnezzarª the kingª had set up.ª°" {Dan 3:7} + "Nowª ifª ye beª readyª that¹ at what¹ timeª ye hearª° the soundª of the cornet,ª flute,ª harp,ª° sackbut,ª psaltery,ª and dulcimer,ª and allª kindsª of musick,ª ye fall downª° and worshipª° the imageª which¹ I have made;ª° [well]: but ifª ye worshipª° not,ª ye shall be castª° the same hourª into the midstª of a burningª° fieryª furnace;ª and whoª [is] that¹ Godª that¹ shall deliverª° you out ofª my hands?ª" {Dan 3:15} + "That chantª° to¹ the soundª of the viol,ª [and] inventª° to themselves instrumentsª of musick,ª like David;ª" {Ams 6:5}; The difficult words shiddah weshiddoth are variously rendered. The LXX have οινοχοον και οινοχοας, "male and female cup-bearers," with which the Syriac and Arabic and Parkhurst agree; Aquila, κυλικον και κυλικια, "a cup and smaller cups;" Jerome, scyphos et urceolos, Vulgate urceos), "goblets and pots;" Targum, "warm and cold baths;" others, as M. Desvoeux, "male and female captives;" others, "cooks and confectioners;" others, "a species of musical compositions," derived from Sido, a celebrated Phoenician woman, to whom Sanchoniatho attributes the invention of music; but others, with more probability, "wives and concubines;" and siddoth may be in this sense synonymous with the Arabic seedat, domina, conjux from sada, in Conj. V. conjugium inivit. Of the former, Solomon had three hundred, and of the latter, seven hundred; and if they are not mentioned here they are not mentioned at all, which is wholly unaccountable.
