- horror:
- Zilaphah properly signifies the pestilential burning wind called by the Arabs Simoom (see "Upon¹ the wickedª he shall rainª° snares,ª fireª and brimstone,ª and an horribleª tempest:ª [this shall be] the portionª of their cup.ª" {Psa 11:6}). It is here used in a figurative sense for the most horrid mental distress; and strongly marks the idea the Psalmist had of the corrupting, pestilential, and destructive nature of sin. "Riversª of watersª run downª° mine eyes,ª because¹ they keepª° not¹ thy law.ª" {Psa 119:136} + "I beheldª° the transgressors,ª° and was grieved;ª° because¹ they keptª° not¹ thy word.ª" {Psa 119:158} + "And when I heardª°¹ this¹ thing,ª I rentª°¹ my garmentª and my mantle,ª and plucked offª° the hairª¹ of my headª and of my beard,ª and sat downª° astonied.ª°" {Ezr 9:3} + "Should we againª° breakª° thy commandments,ª and join in affinityª° with the peopleª of these¹ abominations?ª wouldest not¹ thou be angryª° with us till¹ thou hadst consumedª° [us], so that [there should be] no¹ remnantª nor escaping?ª" {Ezr 9:14} + "Then Ezraª rose upª° from beforeª¹ the houseª of God,ª and went²°¹ into¹ the chamberª of Johananª the sonª of Eliashib:ª and [when] he came²°¹ thither,¹ he did eatª° no¹ bread,ª nor¹ drinkª° water:ª for¹ he mournedª° because¹ of the transgressionª of them that had been carried away.ª" {Ezr 10:6} + "But if¹ ye will not¹ hearª° it, my soulª shall weepª° in secret placesª forª¹ [your] pride;ª and mine eyeª shall weep²° sore,ª° and run downª° with tears,ª because¹ the LORD'Sª flockª is carried away captive.ª°" {Jer 13:17} + "Thenª Daniel,ª whose¹ nameª [was] Belteshazzar,ª was astoniedª° for oneª hour,ª and his thoughtsª troubledª° him. The kingª spake,ª° and said,ª° Belteshazzar,ª let notª the dream,ª or the interpretationª thereof, troubleª° thee. Belteshazzarª answeredª° and said,ª° My lord,ª the dreamª [be] to them that hateª° thee, and the interpretationª thereof to thine enemies.ª" {Dan 4:19} + "When I heard,ª° my bellyª trembled;ª° my lipsª quiveredª° at the voice:ª rottennessª enteredª° into my bones,ª and I trembledª° in¹ myself, that¹ I might restª° in the dayª of trouble:ª when he cometh upª° unto the people,ª he will invade¹ them with his troops.²°" {Hab 3:16} + "Andª whenª he was come near,ª° he beheldª° the¹ city,ª and weptª° overª it,ª ... Saying,ª° Ifª² thou hadst known,ª° evenª thou,ª at least²¹¹ inª thisª thyª day,ª the thingsª [which belong] untoª thyª peace!ª butª nowª they are hidª° fromª thineª eyes.ª" {Lke 19:41-42} + "I sayª° the truthª inª Christ,ª I lieª° not,ª myª conscienceª also bearing²° me² witnessª°¹ inª the Holyª Ghost,ª ... Forª Iª could wishª° that myself²¹ wereª° accursedª fromª Christª forª myª brethren,ª myª kinsmenª accordingª to the flesh:ª" {Rom 9:1-3} + "[And] lest,ª when I comeª° again,ª myª Godª will humbleª° meª amongª you,ª andª [that] I shall bewailª° manyª which² have sinned already,ª° andª have²° notª repentedª° ofª the¹ uncleannessª andª fornicationª andª lasciviousnessª whichª they have committed.ª°" {2Co 12:21} + "(Forª manyª walk,ª° of whomª I have toldª° youª often,ª andª nowª tellª° you evenª weeping,ª° [that they are] the¹ enemiesª of the¹ crossª of Christ:ª" {Php 3:18}
