- Their idols:
- They are metal, stone, and wood; and though generally made in the form of man, they can neither see, hear, smell, feel, walk, nor speak! Even the wiser heathen made them the objects of their jests. He that [is] so impoverishedª°°²° that he hath no oblationª choosethª° a treeª [that] will not¹ rot;ª° he seekethª° unto him a cunningª workmanª to prepareª° a graven image,ª [that] shall not¹ be moved.ª°" {Isa 40:19-20} + "They shall be turnedª° back,ª they shall be greatly² ashamed,ª°¹ that trustª° in graven images,ª that sayª° to the molten images,ª Ye¹ [are] our gods.ª" {Isa 42:17} + "Belª boweth down,ª° Neboª stoopeth,ª° their idolsª were¹ upon the beasts,ª and upon the cattle:ª your carriagesª [were] heavy loaden;ª° [they are] a burdenª to the wearyª [beast]. ... They bearª° him upon¹ the shoulder,ª they carryª° him, and set¹ him in his place,²°¹ and he standeth;ª° from his placeª¹ shall he not¹ remove:ª° yea,¹ [one] shall cryª° unto¹ him, yet can he not¹ answer,ª° nor¹ saveª° him out of his trouble.ª¹" {Isa 46:6-7} + "For¹ the customsª of the peopleª [are] vain:ª for¹ [one] cuttethª° a treeª out of the forest,ª¹ the workª of the handsª of the workman,ª with the axe.ª ... They¹ [are] uprightª as the palm tree,ª but speakª° not:¹ they must needs²° be borne,ª° because¹ they cannot¹ go.ª° Be not¹ afraidª° of¹ them; for¹ they cannot¹ do evil,ª° neither¹ also¹ [is it] in¹ them to do good.ª°" {Jer 10:3-5} + "For¹ from Israelª¹ [was] it¹ also: the workmanª madeª° it;¹ therefore it [is] not¹ God:ª but¹ the calfª of Samariaª shall be¹ broken in pieces.ª" {Hsa 8:6} + "What¹ profitethª° the graven imageª that¹ the makerª° thereof hath gravenª° it; the molten image,ª and a teacherª° of lies,ª that¹ the makerª° of his workª trustethª° therein,¹ to makeª° dumbª idols?ª ... But the LORDª [is] in his holyª temple:ª let all¹ the earthª keep silenceª° beforeª¹ him." {Hab 2:18-20} + "Moreoverª ye seeª° andª hear,ª° thatª notª aloneª at Ephesus,ª butª almostª throughout allª Asia,ª thisª Paulª hath persuadedª° and turned awayª° muchª people,ª sayingª° thatª they beª° noª gods,ª whichª are madeª° withª hands:ª" {Act 19:26} + "Andª when the¹ townclerkª had appeasedª° the¹ people,ª he said,ª° [Ye] menª of Ephesus,ª¹ whatª² manª is¹ there²° thatª knowethª° notª how that the¹ cityª of the Ephesiansª isª° a worshipperª of the¹ greatª goddessª Diana,ª andª of the [image] which fell down from Jupiter?ª" {Act 19:35} + "Whatª say¹ I²° then?ª thatª the idolª isª° any thing,ª orª¹ that² which is offered in sacrifice to idolsª isª° any thing?ª ...
