- Hitherto:
- Thus far shall thy flux and reflux extend. The tides are marvellously limited and regulated, not only by the lunar and solar attraction, but by the quantum of time required to remove any part of the earth's surface, by its rotation round its axis, from under the immediate attractive influence of the sun and moon. Hence the attraction of the sun and moon, and the gravitation of the sea to its own centre, which prevent too great a flux on the one hand, and too great reflux on the other, are some of those bars and doors by which its proud waves are stayed, and prevented from coming farther. "Which by his strengthª setteth fastª° the mountains;ª [being] girdedª° with power:ª ... Which stillethª° the noiseª of the seas,ª the noiseª of their waves,ª and the tumultª of the people.ª" {Psa 65:6-7} + "The floodsª have lifted up,ª° O LORD,ª the floodsª have lifted upª° their voice;ª the floodsª lift upª° their waves.ª ... The LORDª on highª [is] mightierª than the noiseª¹ of manyª waters,ª [yea, than] the mightyª wavesª of the sea.ª" {Psa 93:3-4} + "When he gaveª° to the seaª his decree,ª that the watersª should not¹ passª° his commandment:ª when he appointedª° the foundations²¹ of the earth:ª" {Prv 8:29} + "Andª he arose,ª° and rebukedª° the¹ wind,ª andª saidª° unto the¹ sea,ª Peace,ª° be still.ª° Andª the¹ windª ceased,ª° andª there wasª° a greatª calm.ª ... Andª they fearedª° exceedingly,ªª andª saidª° one²° to² another,ª¹ What² manner of man²¹ isª° this,ª thatª evenª the¹ windª andª the¹ seaª obeyª° him?ª" {Mrk 4:39-41}
