- Yet all this:
- Pride will ever render its possessor unhappy. Haman, though possessed of immense riches, glory, and honour, and the prime favourite of his king, is wretched, because he could not have the homage of that man whom his heart even despised! Oh, how distressing are the inquietudes of pride and vanity. "And Ahabª cameª° into¹ his houseª heavyª and displeasedª because¹ of the wordª which¹ Nabothª the Jezreeliteª had spokenª° to¹ him: for he had said,ª° I will not¹ giveª° thee¹ the inheritanceª of my fathers.ª And he laid him downª° upon¹ his bed,ª and turned awayª°¹ his face,ª and would eatª° no¹ bread.ª ... And he saidª° unto¹ her, Because¹ I spakeª° unto¹ Nabothª the Jezreelite,ª and saidª° unto him, Giveª° me¹ thy vineyardª for money;ª or¹ else, if¹ it please²¹ thee,¹ I will giveª° thee [another] vineyardª for¹ it: and he answered,ª° I will not¹ giveª° thee¹ my vineyard.ª" {1Kg 21:4-6} + "The wicked² man¹ travaileth²° with pain¹ all¹ [his] days,ª and the numberª of yearsª is hiddenª° to the oppressor.ª" {Job 15:20} + "He tearethª° himselfª in his anger:ª shall the earthª be forsakenª° for¹ thee? and shall the rockª be removedª° out of his place?ª¹" {Job 18:4} + "Vanityª of vanities,ª saithª° the Preacher,ª vanityª of vanities;ª all¹ [is] vanity.ª" {Ecc 1:2} + "I have seenª°¹ all¹ the worksª that are doneª°¹ under¹ the sun;ª and, behold,¹ all¹ [is] vanityª and vexationª of spirit.ª" {Ecc 1:14} + "Notª that¹ I speakª° in respect²² of¹ want:ª forª Iª have learned,ª° inª whatsoever stateª I am,ª° [therewith] to beª° content.ª ...ª I knowª° both how to be abased,ª° andª I knowª° how to abound:ª°¹ every whereª² andª inª all thingsª I am instructedª° bothª to be fullª° andª to be hungry,ª° bothª to aboundª° andª to suffer need.ª°" {Php 4:11-12}
