- great mourning:
- It cannot reasonably be doubted, that the mournings, fastings, and weepings of the Jews were attended by constant prayers and supplications; though all mention of them, and of the glorious God whom they worshipped, seems to have been studiously avoided. "And when he came,ª° lo,¹ Eliª satª° upon¹ a seatª by the waysideªª²° watching:ª° for¹ his heartª trembledª for¹ the arkª of God.ª And when the manª cameª° into the city,ª and toldª° [it], all¹ the cityª cried out.ª° ... And when Eliª heardª°¹ the noiseª of the crying,ª he said,ª° What¹ [meaneth] the noiseª of this¹ tumult?ª And the manª cameª° in hastily,ª° and toldª° Eli.ª" {1Sm 4:13-14} + "Then cameª° the messengersª to Gibeahª of Saul,ª and toldª° the tidingsª in the earsª of the people:ª and all¹ the peopleª lifted upª°¹ their voices,ª and wept.ª°" {1Sm 11:4} + "Therefore¹¹ saidª° I, Look awayª° from¹ me; I will weepª bitterly,ª° labourª° not¹ to comfortª° me, because¹ of the spoilingª of the daughterª of my people.ª" {Isa 22:4} + "And in that¹ dayª did the Lordª GODª of hostsª callª° to weeping,ª and to mourning,ª and to baldness,ª and to girdingª° with sackcloth:ª" {Isa 22:12} + "And it came to pass,¹ when kingª Hezekiahª heardª° [it], that he rentª°¹ his clothes,ª and covered²° himself¹ with sackcloth,ª and wentª° into the houseª of the LORD.ª ... And they saidª° unto¹ him, Thus¹ saithª° Hezekiah,ª This¹ dayª [is] a dayª of trouble,ª and of rebuke,ª and of blasphemy:ª for¹ the childrenª are comeª° to¹ the birth,ª and [there is] not¹ strengthª to bring forth.ª°" {Isa 37:1-3}
