the virgins:
"And let the kingª appointª ° officersª in all¹ the provincesª of his kingdom,ª that they may gather togetherª °¹ all¹ the fairª ª youngª virginsª unto¹ Shushanª the palace,ª to¹ the houseª of the women,ª unto¹ the custodyª of Hegeª the king'sª chamberlain,ª keeperª ° of the women;ª and let their things for purificationª be givenª ° [them]: ... And let the maidenª which¹ pleasethª ª ° the kingª be queenª ° instead¹ of Vashti.ª And the thingª pleasedª ª ° the king;ª and he did¹ so.² °¹" {Est 2:3-4}

sat in the king's gate:
"In those¹ days,ª while Mordecaiª satª ° in the king'sª gate,ª twoª of the king'sª chamberlains,ª Bigthanª and Teresh,ª of those which keptª °¹ the door,ª were wroth,ª ° and soughtª ° to layª ° handª on the kingª Ahasuerus.ª" {Est 2:21} + "And all¹ the king'sª servants,ª that¹ [were] in the king'sª gate,ª bowed,ª ° and reverencedª ° Haman:ª for¹ the kingª had so¹ commandedª ° concerning him. But Mordecaiª bowedª ° not,¹ nor¹ did [him] reverence.ª ° ...
