- the wood offering:
- It was the business of the Nethinim to procure the wood for the fires of the temple, but it is probable few of them returned to their former masters after the captivity; and therefore they found it necessary to cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people, who should furnish the wood at appointed times. This bringing of the wood to the temple at last became a great day; and was constituted into a feast, called by Josephus, ξυλοφορια, "the carrying of the wood" (Bell. 1. ii. c. 17. sec.6). "And for the woodª offering,ª at timesª appointed,ª° and for the firstfruits.ª Rememberª° me, O my God,ª for good.ª" {Neh 13:31} + "And the fireª upon¹ the altarª shall be burningª° in it; it shall not¹ be put out:ª° and the priestª shall burnª° woodª on¹ it every morning,ª and lay¹ the burnt offeringª in order²° upon¹ it; and he shall burnª° thereon¹ the fatª of the peace offerings.ª" {Lev 6:12} + "And Joshuaª madeª° them that¹ dayª hewersª° of woodª and drawersª° of waterª for the congregation,ª and for the altarª of the LORD,ª even unto¹ this¹ day,ª in¹ the placeª which¹ he should choose.ª°" {Jsh 9:27} + "And Lebanonª [is] notª sufficientª to burn,ª° nor¹ the beastsª thereof sufficientª for a burnt offering.ª" {Isa 40:16}
