- Let not the gates:
- This is, the gates were not to be opened till sun-rise, and to be shut at sun-set; which is still the custom in many cities of the East. If a traveller arrives after sun-set, he finds the gates shut, and on no consideration will they open them till morning. "And it came to pass,¹ that when¹ the gatesª of Jerusalemª began to be darkª° beforeª the sabbath,ª I commandedª° that the gatesª should be shut,ª° and chargedª° that¹ they should not¹ be openedª° till¹ afterª the sabbath:ª and [some] of my servantsª¹ setª° I at¹ the gates,ª [that] there should no¹ burdenª be brought inª° on the sabbathª day.ª" {Neh 13:19} + "[[A Songª of degreesª for Solomon.]]ª Except¹¹ the LORDª buildª° the house,ª they labourª° in vainª that buildª° it: except¹¹ the LORDª keepª° the city,ª the watchmanª° wakethª° [but] in vain.ª" {Psa 127:1} + "Behold,ª° Iª send²° you² forthª°¹ asª sheepª inª the midstª of wolves:ª be¹ ye²° thereforeª wiseª asª serpents,ª andª harmlessª asª doves.ª" {Mtt 10:16}
