{Nehemiah 5:18} Now [that] which x834 was x1961 prepared 6213 z8737 [for me] daily 3117 x259 [was] one 259 ox 7794 [and] six 8337 choice 1305 z8803 sheep; 6629 also fowls 6833 were prepared 6213 z8738 for me, and once x996 in ten 6235 days 3117 store 7235 z8687 of all x3605 sorts of wine: 3196 yet for all 5973 this x2088 required 1245 z8765 not x3808 I the bread 3899 of the governor, 6346 because x3588 the bondage 5656 was heavy 3513 z8804 upon x5921 this x2088 people. 5971
Now that:
"And Solomon'sª provisionª for oneª dayª was¹ thirtyª measuresª of fine flour,ª and threescoreª measuresª of meal,ª ... Tenª fatª oxen,ª and twentyª oxenª out of the pastures,ª and an hundredª sheep,ª beside¹ harts,ª¹ and roebucks,ª and fallowdeer,ª and fattedª° fowl.ª" {1Kg 4:22-23}
one ox:
This was food sufficient for more than two hundred men. Bp. Pococke says that the bey of Tunis had daily twelve sheep, with fish and fowls, soups, oranges, eggs, onions, boiled rice, etc., etc. His nobles dined with him; after they had done, the servants sat down; and when they had finished, the poor took what was left. Here the bey's twelve sheep are equal to Nehemiah's one ox and six choice sheep; and probably the mode of living between the two was nearly alike. It is still the practice in the East to calculate the expenses of the table, not by the money paid, but by the provisions consumed by the guests.
required:
"Moreover¹ from the timeª¹ that¹ I was appointedª° to be¹ their governorª in the landª of Judah,ª from the twentiethª yearª¹ even unto¹ the twoª and thirtiethª yearª of Artaxerxesª the king,ª [that is], twelveªª years,ª I¹ and my brethrenª have not¹ eatenª° the breadª of the governor.ª ... But the formerª governorsª that¹ [had been] beforeª me were chargeableª° unto¹ the people,ª and had takenª° of¹ them breadª and wine,ª besideª fortyª shekelsª of silver;ª yea,¹ even² their servantsª bare ruleª° over¹ the people:ª but so¹ didª° not¹ I,¹ becauseª¹ of the fearª of God.ª" {Neh 5:14-15}
because the bondage:
"The wickedª borroweth,ª° and payeth¹ not¹ again:²° but the righteousª sheweth mercy,ª° and giveth.ª°" {Psa 37:21} + "[He is] everª¹ merciful,ª° and lendeth;ª° and his seedª [is] blessed.ª" {Psa 37:26}
