- Tatnai:
- Tatnai was governor of the provinces which belonged to the Persian empire west of the Euphrates, comprehending Syria, Arabia Deserta, Phoenicia, and Samaria. He seems to have been a mild and judicious man, and to have acted with great prudence and caution, and without any passion or prejudice. "The copyª of the letterª that¹ Tatnai,ª governorª on this sideª the river,ª and Shetharboznai,ª and his companionsª the Apharsachites,ª which¹ [were] on this sideª the river,ª sentª° untoª Dariusª the king:ª" {Ezr 5:6} + "Nowª [therefore], Tatnai,ª governorª beyondª the river,ª Shetharboznai,ª and your companionsª the Apharsachites,ª which¹ [are] beyondª the river,ª be¹ ye²° farª fromª thence:ª" {Ezr 6:6} + "Thenª Tatnai,ª governorª on this sideª the river,ª Shetharboznai,ª and their companions,ª according² to¹ that which¹ Dariusª the kingª had sent,ª° soª they didª° speedily.ª" {Ezr 6:13} + "And I,² [even] Iª Artaxerxesª the king,ª do makeª° a decreeª to allª the treasurersª which¹ [are] beyondª the river,ª that¹ whatsoever¹¹ Ezraª the priest,ª the scribeª of the lawª of¹ the Godª of heaven,ª shall requireª° of you, it be doneª° speedily,ª" {Ezr 7:21} + "Moreover I saidª° unto the king,ª If¹ it pleaseª°¹ the king,ª let lettersª be givenª° me to¹ the governorsª beyondª the river,ª that¹ they may convey me overª° till¹¹ I comeª° into¹ Judah;ª ... Then I cameª° to¹ the governorsª beyondª the river,ª and gaveª° them¹ the king'sª letters.ª Now the kingª had sentª° captainsª of the armyª and horsemenª with¹ me." {Neh 2:7-9}
