- the adversaries:
- These were the Samaritans, the descendants of the various nations with which the kings of Assyria had peopled Israel, when they had carried the original inhabitants captive. And, behold,¹ I purposeª° to buildª° an houseª unto the nameª of the LORDª my God,ª as¹ the LORDª spakeª° unto¹ Davidª my father,ª saying,ª° Thy son,ª whom¹ I will setª° upon¹ thy throneª in thy room,¹ he¹ shall buildª° an houseª unto my name.ª" {1Kg 5:4-5} + "Behold,¹ a sonª shall be bornª° to thee, who¹ shall be¹ a manª of rest;ª and I will give him restª° from all¹¹ his enemiesª° round about:ª¹ for¹ his nameª shall be¹ Solomon,ª and I will giveª° peaceª and quietnessª unto¹ Israelª in his days.ª ... He¹ shall buildª° an houseª for my name;ª and he¹ shall be¹ my son,ª and I¹ [will be] his father;ª and I will establishª° the throneª of his kingdomª over¹ Israelª for² ever.ª¹" {1Ch 22:9-10} + "But it came to pass,¹ that when¹ Sanballatª heardª° that¹ we¹ buildedª°¹ the wall,ª he was wroth,ª° and took great²° indignation,ª°¹ and mockedª°¹ the Jews.ª ... And our adversariesª said,ª° They shall not¹ know,ª° neither¹ see,ª° till¹¹ we comeª° in¹ the midst² amongª them, and slayª° them, and cause¹ the workª to cease.ª°" {Neh 4:1-11} + "Knowª° therefore and understand,ª° [that] from¹ the going forthª of the commandmentª to restoreª° and to buildª° Jerusalemª unto¹ the Messiahª the Princeª [shall be] sevenª weeks,ª and threescoreª and twoª weeks:ª the streetª shall be builtª° again,ª° and the wall,ª even in troublousª times.ª" {Dan 9:25} + "Forª a greatª doorª andª effectualª is openedª° unto me,ª andª [there are] manyª adversaries.ª°" {1Co 16:9}
