- the fourteenth:
- "And ye shall keepª¹ it up until¹ the fourteenthªª dayª of the same¹ month:ª and the wholeª assemblyª of the congregationª of Israelª shall killª° it inª the evening.ª" {Exd 12:6} + "In the fourteenthªª dayª of this¹ month,ª at¹ even,ª ye shall keepª° it in his appointed season:ª according to all¹ the ritesª of it, and according to all¹ the ceremoniesª thereof, shall ye keepª° it." {Num 9:3} + "Observeª°¹ the monthª of Abib,ª and keepª° the passoverª unto the LORDª thy God:ª for¹ in the monthª of Abibª the LORDª thy Godª brought thee forthª° out of Egyptª¹ by night.ª ... Sixª daysª thou shalt eatª° unleavened bread:ª and on the seventhª dayª [shall be] a solemn assemblyª to the LORDª thy God:ª thou shalt doª° no¹ workª [therein]." {Deu 16:1-8} + "And the childrenª of the captivityª keptª°¹ the passoverª upon the fourteenthªª [day] of the firstª month.ª" {Ezr 6:19} + "In the firstª [month], in the fourteenthªª dayª of the month,ª ye shall have¹ the passover,ª a feastª of seven²¹ days;ª unleavened breadª shall be eaten.ª°" {Ezk 45:21}; Josiah's solemnization of the passover, which is merely alluded to at "And the kingª commandedª°¹ all¹ the people,ª saying,ª° Keepª° the passoverª unto the LORDª your God,ª as [it is] writtenª° in¹ the bookª of this¹ covenant.ª" {2Kg 23:21}, is very particularly related her, while the destruction of idolatry is largely related in the Kings, and here only touched upon. The feasts of the Lord God, appointed by the ceremonial law, were very numerous; but the passover was the chief. It was the first which was solemnized in the night wherein Israel came out of Egypt, and ushered in those which were afterwards instituted, and it was the last great feast which was held in the night wherein Christ was betrayed, before the vail of the temple was rent in twain. Be means of this feast, both Josiah and Hezekiah revived religion in their day.
