he went out:
"And Jehoshaphatª the kingª of Judahª returnedª° to¹ his houseª in peaceª to Jerusalem.ª ... Behold:
To this beautiful speech nothing can be added by the best comment. It is simple, humane, pious, and overwhelmingly convincing; and it is no wonder that it produced the effect here described. That there was much humanity, as well as firmness, in the heads of the children of Ephraim, who joined with the prophet of Jehovah on this occasion, their subsequent conduct, as detailed in the "And the men²¹ which¹ were expressedª° by nameª rose up,ª° and tookª° the captives,ª and with¹ the spoilª clothedª° all¹ that were nakedª among them, and arrayedª° them, and shodª° them, and gave them to eatª° and to drink,ª° and anointedª° them, and carriedª° all¹ the feebleª° of them upon asses,ª and broughtª° them to Jericho,ª the city² of palm trees,ª²° toª their brethren:ª then they returnedª° to Samaria.ª" {2Ch 28:15}, sufficiently proves. They did not barely dismiss these most unfortunate captives, but they took that very spoil which their victorious army had taken, and with clothed, shod, fed, and anointed these distressed people, set the feeblest of them upon asses, and escorted them safely to Jericho! We can scarcely find a parallel to this in the universal history of the wars which savage man has carried on against his fellows from the foundation of the world. The compliance also of the whole army, in leaving both the captives and spoil to the disposal of the princes, was really wonderful, and perhaps unparalleled in history. Both the princes and army are worthy to be held up to the admiration and imitation of mankind.
because the LORD[YHWH] God:
"Wherefore the LORDª his Godª deliveredª° him into the handª of the kingª of Syria;ª and they smoteª° him, and carried awayª° a great¹ multitude² of¹ them captives,ª and broughtª° [them] to Damascus.ª And he was also¹ deliveredª° into the handª of the kingª of Israel,ª who smoteª° him with a greatª slaughter.ª" {2Ch 28:5} + "Therefore the angerª of the LORDª was hotª° against Israel,ª and he soldª° them into the handª of Chushanrishathaimª kingª of Mesopotamia:ª and the childrenª of Israelª servedª°¹ Chushanrishathaimª eightª years.ª" {Jdg 3:8} + "For¹ they persecuteª° [him] whom¹ thou¹ hast smitten;ª° and they talkª° to¹ the griefª of those whom thou hast wounded.ª" {Psa 69:26} + "O² Assyrian,ª the rodª of mine anger,ª and the staffª in their handª is mine indignation.ª ...
