- the king of the Ammonites:
- We find here, that he brought the Ammonites under a heavy tribute for three years; but whether this was the effect of his prevailing against them, is not so evident. Some think that they paid this tribute for three years, and then revolted; that, in consequence, he attacked them, and their utter subjection was the result. "It came to pass¹ after¹ this²¹ also, [that] the childrenª of Moab,ª and the childrenª of Ammon,ª and with¹ them [other] beside¹ the Ammonites,ª cameª° against¹ Jehoshaphatª to battle.ª" {2Ch 20:1} + "And it came to pass¹ in process of time,ª¹ that the childrenª of Ammonª made warª° against¹ Israel.ª ... And he smoteª° them from Aroer,ª¹ even till¹ thou comeª° to Minnith,ª [even] twentyª cities,ª and unto¹ the plainª of the vineyards,ª°² with a veryª greatª slaughter.ª Thus the childrenª of Ammonª were subduedª° beforeª¹ the childrenª of Israel.ª" {Jdg 11:4-33} + "And it came to pass¹ after¹ this,²¹ that the kingª of the childrenª of Ammonª died,ª° and Hanunª his sonª reignedª° in his stead.¹ ... And when the childrenª of Ammonª sawª° that¹ the Syriansª were fled,ª° then fledª° they also beforeª¹ Abishai,ª and enteredª° into the city.ª So Joabª returnedª° from¹¹ the childrenª of Ammon,ª and cameª° to Jerusalem.ª" {2Sm 10:1-14} + "Concerning the Ammonites,ª²¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORD;ª Hath Israelª no¹ sons?ª hath he no¹ heir?ª° why¹ [then] doth their kingª inheritª°¹ Gad,ª and his peopleª dwellª° in his cities?ª ... And afterwardª¹ I will bring againª°¹ the captivityª of the childrenª of Ammon,ª saithª° the LORD.ª" {Jer 49:1-6}
