- Ophel:
- or, the tower, "The wall," says the Targum, "of the interior palace." Ophel appears to have been a tower, or fort, on the city wall, in which we read "the Nehthinim dwelt." "Now after¹ this²¹ he builtª° a wallª withoutª the cityª of David,ª on the west sideª of Gihon,ª in the valley,ª even to the entering inª° at the fishª gate,ª and compassed²° about¹ Ophel,ª and raised it up²° a very great height,ª¹ and putª° captainsª of warª in all¹ the fencedª° citiesª of Judah.ª" {2Ch 33:14} + "Moreover the Nethinimsª dweltª°¹ in Ophel,ª unto¹ [the place] over against¹ the waterª gateª toward the east,ª and the towerª that lieth out.ª° ... Afterª them the Tekoitesª repairedª° anotherª piece,ª over against¹¹ the greatª towerª that lieth out,ª° even unto¹ the wallª of Ophel.ª" {Neh 3:26-27}
