- Houbigant omits the words of Israel. Bp. Patrick, however, is of the opinion that Judah is here called by the general name of Israel, but it is probable, that these "chief fathers of Israel," were the descendants of those priests and Levites, and other pious persons of the ten tribes, who left their cities and possessions, and joined themselves to Judah, in the days of Jeroboam. See the parallel passages. "And the priestsª and the Levitesª that¹ [were] in all¹ Israelª resortedª° to¹ him out of all¹¹ their coasts.ª ... So they strengthenedª°¹ the kingdomª of Judah,ª and made¹ Rehoboamª the sonª of Solomonª strong,ª° threeª years:ª for¹ threeª yearsª they walkedª° in the wayª of Davidª and Solomon.ª" {2Ch 11:13-17} + "And saidª° unto them, Ye¹ [are] the chiefª of the fathersª of the Levites:ª sanctify²° yourselves,¹ [both] ye¹ and your brethren,ª that ye may bring upª°¹ the arkª of the LORDª Godª of Israelª unto¹ [the place that] I have preparedª° for it." {1Ch 15:12} + "And Shemaiahª the sonª of Nethaneelª the scribe,ª° [one] of¹ the Levites,²¹ wroteª° them beforeª the king,ª and the princes,ª and Zadokª the priest,ª and Ahimelechª the sonª of Abiathar,ª and [before] the chiefª of the fathersª of the priestsª and Levites:ª oneª principalª householdª being takenª° for Eleazar,ª and [one] takenª° for Ithamar.ª" {1Ch 24:6}
