they were dead:
"Thus the LORDª savedª °¹ Israelª that¹ dayª out of the handª ¹ of the Egyptians;ª and Israelª sawª °¹ the Egyptiansª deadª ° upon¹ the seaª shore.ª" {Exd 14:30} + "For¹ there fell² ° down¹ manyª slain,ª because¹ the warª [was] of God.ª ¹ And they dweltª ° in their steads¹ until¹ the captivity.ª" {1Ch 5:22} + "He shall judgeª ° among the heathen,ª he shall fillª ° [the places] with the dead bodies;ª he shall woundª ° the headsª over¹ manyª countries.ª" {Psa 110:6} + "Then the angelª of the LORDª went forth,ª ° and smoteª ° in the campª of the Assyriansª a hundredª and fourscoreª and fiveª thousand:ª and when they arose earlyª ° in the morning,ª behold,¹ they [were] all¹ deadª ° corpses.ª" {Isa 37:36} + "They comeª ° to fightª ° with¹ the Chaldeans,ª but [it is] to fillª ° them with¹ the dead bodiesª of men,ª whom¹ I have slainª ° in mine angerª and in my fury,ª and for¹ all¹ whose¹ wickednessª I have hidª ° my faceª from this¹ city.ª ¹" {Jer 33:5}
