- horns of iron:
- Mr. Bruce, in describing the head-dress of the governors of Abyssinia, says, "A large broad fillet was bound upon their forehead, and tied behind their head. In the middle of this was a horn, or conical piece of silver, gilt, about four inches long, much in the shape of our common candle extinguishers. This is called kirn, keren, and is only worn in reviews, or parades after victory." Such, it may be supposed, were the horns of iron which Zedekiah (who appears to have acted the hero returning from a military triumph) made for himself, when he presumed, in the name of Jehovah, to flatter his prince with the promise of victory: "Thus saith the Lord, With these thou shalt push Syria, until they be consumed." "Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª to¹ me; Makeª° thee bondsª and yokes,ª and putª° them upon¹ thy neck,ª" {Jer 27:2} + "Then Hananiahª the prophetª tookª°¹ the yokeª from off¹¹ the prophetª Jeremiah'sª neck,ª and brakeª° it. ... For¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª the Godª of Israel;ª I have putª° a yokeª of ironª upon¹ the neckª of all¹ these¹ nations,ª that they may serveª°¹ Nebuchadnezzarª kingª of Babylon;ª and they shall serveª° him: and I have givenª° him¹ the beastsª of the fieldª also.¹" {Jer 28:10-14} + "Then lifted I upª°¹ mine eyes,ª and saw,ª° and behold¹ fourª horns.ª ... Then saidª° I, What¹ comeª° these¹ to do?ª° And he spake,ª° saying,ª° These¹ [are] the hornsª which¹ have scatteredª°¹ Judah,ª so that² no¹ manª did lift upª° his head:ª but these¹ are comeª° to frayª° them, to cast outª°¹ the hornsª of the Gentiles,ª which lifted upª° [their] hornª over¹ the landª of Judahª to scatterª° it." {Zch 1:18-21} + "² Nowª asª¹ Jannesª andª Jambresª withstoodª° Moses,ª soª do²° theseª alsoª resistª° the¹ truth:ª menª of corruptª° minds,ª reprobateª concerningª the¹ faith.ª" {2Tm 3:8}
