2. The Levites 3. The Priests We may presume that the Princes instructed the people in the nature of the civil law and constitution of the kingdom; that the Levites instructed them in every thing that appertained to the temple service, and ritual law; and that the Priests instructed them in the nature and design of their religion. Thus the nation became thoroughly instructed in their duty to God, to the king, and to each other; they therefore became as one man; and against a people thus united, on such principles, no enemy could be successful. "Behold,ª° I have taughtª° you statutesª and judgments,ª even asª the LORDª my Godª commandedª° me, that ye should doª° so¹ inª the landª whither¹¹ ye¹ goª° to possessª° it." {Deu 4:5} + "Come,²°¹ ye children,ª hearkenª° unto me: I will teachª° you the fearª of the LORD.ª" {Psa 34:11} + "[Then] will I teachª° transgressorsª° thy ways;ª and sinnersª shall be convertedª° unto¹ thee." {Psa 51:13} + "I¹ the Preacherª was¹ kingª over¹ Israelª in Jerusalem.ª" {Ecc 1:12} + "And moreover,ª because the preacherª was¹¹ wise,ª he still¹ taughtª°¹ the peopleª knowledge;ª yea, he gave good heed,²°¹ and sought out,ª° [and] set in orderª° manyª° proverbs.ª ... The preacherª soughtª° to find outª° acceptableª words:ª and [that which was] writtenª° [was] upright,ª [even] wordsª of truth.ª" {Ecc 12:9-10} + "And kingsª shall be¹ thy nursing fathers,ª° and their queensª thy nursing mothers:ª° they shall bow downª° to thee with [their] faceª toward the earth,ª and lick upª° the dustª of thy feet;ª and thou shalt knowª° that¹ I¹ [am] the LORD:ª for they¹ shall not¹ be ashamedª° that waitª° for me." {Isa 49:23} |
