{1 Chronicles 26:1} Concerning the divisions 4256 of the porters: 7778 Of the Korhites 7145 [was] Meshelemiah 4920 the son 1121 of Kore, 6981 of x4480 the sons 1121 of Asaph. 623

the divisions:
There were four classes of these, each of which belonged to the four gates of the temple, which opened to the four cardinal points of heaven. The eastern gate fell to Shelemiah; the northern to Zechariah ("And the lotª eastwardª fellª ° to Shelemiah.ª Then for Zechariahª his son,ª a wiseª counsellor,ª ° they castª ° lots;ª and his lotª came outª ° northward.ª" {1Ch 26:14}); the southern to Obed-edom ("To Obededomª southward;ª and to his sonsª the houseª of Asuppim.ª" {1Ch 26:15}); and the western to Shuppim and Hosah ("To Shuppimª and Hosahª [the lot came forth] westward,ª with¹ the gateª Shallecheth,ª by the causewayª of the going up,ª ° wardª againstª ward.ª" {1Ch 26:16}). These several persons were captains of these porter-bands, or door-keepers, at the different gates. There were probably a thousand men under each of these captains; as we find, from "Moreover fourª thousandª [were] porters;ª and fourª thousandª praisedª ° the LORDª with the instrumentsª which¹ I made,ª ° [said David], to praiseª ° [therewith]." {1Ch 23:5}, that their whole number was four thousand.

the porters:
"And the portersª [were], Shallum,ª and Akkub,ª and Talmon,ª and Ahiman,ª and their brethren:ª Shallumª [was] the chief;ª ... And they lodgedª ° round aboutª the houseª of God,ª because¹ the chargeª [was] upon¹ them, and the openingª thereof every morningª [pertained] to them.¹" {1Ch 9:17-27} + "And with¹ them their brethrenª of the secondª [degree], Zechariah,ª Ben,ª and Jaaziel,ª and Shemiramoth,ª and Jehiel,ª and Unni,ª Eliab,ª and Benaiah,ª and Maaseiah,ª and Mattithiah,ª and Elipheleh,ª and Mikneiah,ª and Obededom,ª and Jeiel,ª the porters.ª" {1Ch 15:18} + "And Berechiahª and Elkanahª [were] doorkeepersª for the ark.ª ... Korhites:
"And the sonsª of Eliab;ª Nemuel,ª and Dathan,ª and Abiram.ª This¹ [is that] Dathanª and Abiram,ª [which were] famousª ² ° in the congregation,ª who¹ stroveª ° against¹ Mosesª and against¹ Aaronª in the companyª of Korah,ª when they stroveª ° against¹ the LORD:ª ... Meshelemiah:
שׁלמיה [Strong's H8018], Shelemiah, is merely an abbreviation of משׁלמיה [Strong's H4920], Meshelemiah, by the apheresis of מ, mem. "And the lotª eastwardª fellª ° to Shelemiah.ª Then for Zechariahª his son,ª a wiseª counsellor,ª ° they castª ° lots;ª and his lotª came outª ° northward.ª" {1Ch 26:14}, Shelemiah

Asaph:
This variation arises from the rejection of the word אב [Strong's H0001], av, "father," and the mutation of י, yood, into א, aleph; being written in the parallel passages אביסף [Strong's H0043], Ebiasaph, and here אסף [Strong's H0623], Asaph. "The sonª of Tahath,ª the sonª of Assir,ª the sonª of Ebiasaph,ª the sonª of Korah,ª" {1Ch 6:37} + "And Shallumª the sonª of Kore,ª the sonª of Ebiasaph,ª the sonª of Korah,ª and his brethren,ª of the houseª of his father,ª the Korahites,ª [were] over¹ the workª of the service,ª keepersª ° of the gatesª of the tabernacle:ª and their fathers,ª [being] over¹ the hostª of the LORD,ª [were] keepersª ° of the entry.ª" {1Ch 9:19}, Ebiasaph
