fled before Israel:
"Be of good courage,ª ° and let us behave ourselves valiantlyª ° for¹ our people,ª and for¹ the citiesª of our God:ª and let the LORDª doª ° [that which is] goodª in his sight.ª ... So Joabª and the peopleª that¹ [were] with¹ him drew nighª ° beforeª the Syriansª unto the battle;ª and they fledª ° beforeª ¹ him." {1Ch 19:13-14} + "[It is] Godª that girdethª ° me with strength,ª and makethª ° my wayª perfect.ª" {Psa 18:32} + "There is no¹ kingª savedª ° by the multitudeª of an host:ª a mighty manª is not¹ deliveredª ° by muchª strength.ª" {Psa 33:16} + "The LORDª of hostsª [is] with¹ us; the Godª of Jacobª [is] our refuge.ª Selah.ª" {Psa 46:11}

seven thousand:
In the parallel passage, "the men of seven hundred chariots;" which difference probably arose from mistaking ן, noon final, which stands for 700, for ז, zayin, with a dot above, which denotes 7,000, or vice versa. The great similarity of these letters might easily cause the one to be mistaken for the other.

footmen:
If these troops were as we have suppose, a kind of dismounted cavalry, the terms footmen and horsemen might be indifferently applied to them. "And the Syriansª fledª ° beforeª ¹ Israel;ª and Davidª slewª ° [the men of] sevenª hundredª chariotsª of the Syrians,ª ¹ and fortyª thousandª horsemen,ª and smoteª ° Shobachª the captainª of their host,ª who diedª ° there.¹" {2Sm 10:18}, horsemen
