- David:
- The words wyakker Dawid eth col haraichev, should be rendered, "and David disjointed all the chariots;" which is nearly the rendering of the LXX, και παραλυσε Δανιδ παντα τα αρματα. To have houghed the horses would have been both unreasonable and inhuman; for, as he had gained so complete a victory, there was no danger of their falling into the hands of the enemy; and if he did not choose to keep them, which indeed the law would not permit, he ought to have killed them outright., houghed, "But¹ he shall not¹ multiplyª° horsesª to himself, nor¹ cause¹ the peopleª to returnª° to Egypt,ª to the end that¹ he should multiplyª° horses:ª forasmuch as the LORDª hath saidª° unto you, Ye shall henceforthª° returnª° no¹ more¹ that¹ way.ª" {Deu 17:16} + "And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Joshua,ª Be not¹ afraidª° because² of¹¹ them: for¹ to morrowª about this¹ timeª will I¹ deliver them upª°¹ all¹ slainª beforeª Israel:ª thou shalt houghª°¹ their horses,ª and burnª° their chariotsª with fire.ª" {Jsh 11:6} + "And Joshuaª didª° unto them as¹ the LORDª badeª° him: he houghedª°¹ their horses,ª and burntª° their chariotsª with fire.ª" {Jsh 11:9} + "Some¹ [trust] in chariots,ª and some¹ in horses:ª but we¹ will rememberª° the nameª of the LORDª our God.ª" {Psa 20:7} + "There is no¹ kingª savedª° by the multitudeª of an host:ª a mighty manª is not¹ deliveredª° by muchª strength.ª ... An horseª [is] a vain thingª for safety:ª neither¹ shall he deliverª° [any] by his greatª strength.ª" {Psa 33:16-17}
