- with harps:
- The word kinnor, in Chaldee, kinnora, in Syraic, kainoro, in Arabic, kinnarat, and in Greek κινυρος, certainly denotes a harp, played on with the hand, according to "And it came to pass,¹ when¹ the [evil] spiritª from Godª was upon¹ Saul,ª that Davidª tookª°¹ an harp,ª and playedª° with his hand:ª so Saulª was refreshed,ª° and was well,ª° and the evilª spiritª departedª° from¹¹ him." {1Sm 16:23}. The number of strings in the harp was at first three; but afterwards they were increased to four, and at last to seven. "Thus all¹ Israelª brought upª°¹ the arkª of the covenantª of the LORDª with shouting,ª and with soundª of the cornet,ª and with trumpets,ª and with cymbals,ª making a noiseª° with psalteriesª and harps.ª" {1Ch 15:28} + "Asaphª the chief,ª and nextª to him Zechariah,ª Jeiel,ª and Shemiramoth,ª and Jehiel,ª and Mattithiah,ª and Eliab,ª and Benaiah,ª and Obededom:ª and Jeielª with psalteriesªª and with harps;ª but Asaphª made a soundª° with cymbals;ª" {1Ch 16:5} + "And with¹ them Hemanª and Jeduthunª with trumpetsª and cymbalsª for those that should make a sound,ª° and with musicalª instrumentsª of God.ª And the sonsª of Jeduthunª [were] porters.ª" {1Ch 16:42} + "Moreover fourª thousandª [were] porters;ª and fourª thousandª praisedª° the LORDª with the instrumentsª which¹ I made,ª° [said David], to praiseª° [therewith]." {1Ch 23:5} + "Moreover Davidª and the captainsª of the hostª separatedª° to the serviceª of the sonsª of Asaph,ª and of Heman,ª and of Jeduthun,ª who should prophesyª°°² with harps,ª with psalteries,ª and with cymbals:ª and the numberª of the workmenª²¹ according to their serviceª was:¹ ... All¹ these¹ [were] under¹ the handsª of their fatherª for songª [in] the houseª of the LORD,ª with cymbals,ª psalteries,ª and harps,ª for the serviceª of the houseª of God,ª according to¹ the king'sª orderª to Asaph,ª Jeduthun,ª and Heman.ª" {1Ch 25:1-6} + "[That] at what¹ timeª ye hearª° the soundª of the cornet,ª flute,ª harp,ª° sackbut,ª psaltery,ª dulcimer,ª and allª kindsª of musick,ª ye fall downª° and worshipª° the goldenª imageª that¹ Nebuchadnezzarª the kingª hath set up:ª° ... Thereforeªª¹ at that time,ª whenª allª the peopleª heardª° the soundª of the cornet,ª flute,ª harp,ª° sackbut,ª psaltery,ª and allª kindsª of musick,ª allª the people,ª the nations,ª and the languages,ª fell downª° [and] worshippedª° the goldenª imageª that¹ Nebuchadnezzarª the kingª had set up.ª°" {Dan 3:5-7} + "Take thou awayª° from¹¹ me the noiseª of thy songs;ª for I will not¹ hearª° the melodyª of thy viols.ª" {Ams 5:23} + "That chantª° to¹ the soundª of the viol,ª [and] inventª° to themselves instrumentsª of musick,ª like David;ª" {Ams 6:5}
