{1 Chronicles 9:18} Who hitherto x5704 x2008 [waited] in the king's 4428 gate 8179 eastward: 4217 they x1992 [were] porters 7778 in the companies 4264 of the children 1121 of Levi. 3878

Who hitherto waited:
The original is wead hennah, which Houbigant and Dr. Geddes consider as a proper name, and render, "And Adanah was over the eastern gate, called the king's;" i.e., the gate by which the kings of Judah went to the temple. The list is here nearly the same with those found in Ezra and Nehemiah, and contains those who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel, but the list in Nehemiah is more ample, probably because it contains those who came afterwards; the object of the sacred writer here being to give the names of those who came first ("Now the firstª inhabitantsª ° that¹ [dwelt] in their possessionsª in their citiesª [were], the Israelites,ª the priests,ª Levites,ª and the Nethinims.ª" {1Ch 9:2}). These consisted of men belonging not only to the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, but to many of the other tribes of Israel, who took advantage of the proclamation of Cyrus to return to Jerusalem. Properly speaking, the divisions mentioned here constituted the whole of the Israelitish people, who were divided into priests, Levites, common Israelites, and Nethinims.

"And the meatª of his table,ª and the sittingª of his servants,ª and the attendanceª of his ministers,ª ° and their apparel,ª and his cupbearers,² °¹ and his ascentª by which¹ he went upª ° unto the houseª of the LORD;ª there was¹ no¹ more¹ spiritª in her." {1Kg 10:5} + "And he tookª °¹ the rulersª over hundreds,ª and the captains,ª and the guard,ª ° and all¹ the peopleª of the land;ª and they brought downª °¹ the kingª from the houseª ¹ of the LORD,ª and cameª ° by the wayª of the gateª of the guardª ° to the king'sª house.ª And he satª ° on¹ the throneª of the kings.ª" {2Kg 11:19} + "Then saidª ° the LORDª unto¹ me; This¹ gateª shall be¹ shut,ª ° it shall not¹ be opened,ª ° and no¹ manª shall enter² ° in¹ by it; because¹ the LORD,ª the Godª of Israel,ª hath entered² ° in¹ by it, therefore it shall be¹ shut.ª ° ... "Among these¹ [were] the divisionsª of the porters,ª [even] among the chiefª men,ª [having] wardsª one against² another,ª ¹ to ministerª ° in the houseª of the LORD.ª ... These¹ [are] the divisionsª of the portersª among the sonsª of Kore,ª and among the sonsª of Merari.ª" {1Ch 26:12-19}
