- Many similar instances of the naming of children from passing circumstances, occur throughout the sacred volume. See those of a similar character with this verse: "And it came to pass,¹ as her soulª was in departing,ª° (for¹ she died)ª° that she calledª° his nameª Benoni:ª but his fatherª calledª° him Benjamin.ª" {Gen 35:18}, where Rachel, while dying, names her new-born son Ben-oni, or, the son of my sorrow. So in "And she namedª° the childª Ichabod,ª saying,ª° The gloryª is departedª° from Israel:ª¹ becauseª the arkª of Godª was taken,ª° and because¹ of her father in lawª and her husband.ª" {1Sm 4:21}, the wife of Phinehas, on being apprised of the death of Eli and her husband, and that the ark was taken by the Philistines, while in the pains of travail, and dying, named her son I-chabod, or, there is no glory. So also in "Uthaiª the sonª of Ammihud,ª the sonª of Omri,ª the sonª of Imri,ª the sonª of Bani,ª of the childrenª¹ of Pharezª the sonª of Judah.ª" {1Ch 9:4} of this book, we read that Jabez, or, sorrowful, had that name given to him, because his mother "bare him with sorrow." "Although¹ my houseª [be] not¹ so¹ with¹ God;ª yet¹ he hath madeª° with me an everlastingª covenant,ª orderedª° in all¹ [things], and sure:ª° for¹ [this is] all¹ my salvation,ª and all¹ [my] desire,ª although¹ he make [it] not¹ to grow.ª°" {2Sm 23:5}
