- whose number:
- This was probably the number returned by Joab and his assistants, when they made that census of the people with which God was so much displeased. We find that the effective men of Issachar amounted to 87,000 ("And their brethrenª among all¹ the familiesª of Issacharª [were] valiant² men¹ of might,ª reckoned in all by their genealogiesª°¹ fourscoreª and sevenª thousand.ª" {1Ch 7:5}); 22,600 of whom descended from Tola his eldest son; but whether the 36,000 ("And with¹ them, by their generations,ª after the houseª of their fathers,ª [were] bandsª of soldiersª for war,ª sixª and thirtyª thousandª [men]: for¹ they had manyª° wivesª and sons.ª" {1Ch 7:4}) were descendants of Tola by Uzzi, and the 22,600 his descendants by Tola's other sons; or whether another of Issachar's sons be intended, does not clearly appear; though the former seems the more obvious meaning. "And Satanª stood upª° against¹ Israel,ª and provokedª°¹ Davidª to numberª°¹ Israel.ª ... And Joabª gaveª°¹ the sumª of the numberª of the peopleª unto¹ David.ª And all¹ [they of] Israelª were¹ a thousandª thousandª and an hundredª thousandª menª that drewª° sword:ª and Judahª [was] fourª hundredª threescore and tenª thousandª menª that drewª° sword.ª" {1Ch 21:1-5} + "Now the childrenª of Israelª after their number,ª [to wit], the chiefª fathersª and captainsª of thousandsª and hundreds,ª and their officersª° that servedª°¹ the kingª in any¹ matterª of the courses,ª which came inª° and went outª° month² by monthª throughout all¹ the monthsª of the year,ª of everyª courseª [were] twentyª and fourª thousand.ª" {1Ch 27:1} + "But Davidª tookª° not¹ the numberª of them from twenty² years² oldª¹¹¹ and under:ª because¹ the LORDª had saidª° he would increaseª°¹ Israelª like to the starsª of the heavens.ª ... Joabª the sonª of Zeruiahª beganª° to number,ª° but he finishedª° not,¹ because there fell¹ wrathª for itª against¹ Israel;ª neither¹ was the numberª putª° in the accountª of the chroniclesªª of kingª David.ª" {1Ch 27:23-24} + "And againª° the angerª of the LORDª was kindledª° against Israel,ª and he movedª°¹ Davidª against them to say,ª° Go,²°¹ numberª°¹ Israelª and Judah.ª ... And Joabª gave upª°¹ the sumª of the numberª of the peopleª unto¹ the king:ª and there were¹ in Israelª eightª hundredª thousandª valiantª menª°² that drewª° the sword;ª and the menª of Judahª [were] fiveª hundredª thousandª men.ª" {2Sm 24:1-9}
