- slept:
- As Jehoiakim was "buried with the burial of an ass," by being "drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem," without internment, the expression "slept with his fathers," can only mean that the died, or slept the sleep of death. In the East, a body exposed during the night would be a prey to wild animals; if any of it were left till the morning, the carnivorous birds would devour it. "Against¹ him came upª° Nebuchadnezzarª kingª of Babylon,ª and boundª° him in fetters,ª to carry²°¹ him to Babylon.ª" {2Ch 36:6} + "Now the restª of the actsª of Jehoiakim,ª and his abominationsª which¹ he did,ª° and that which was foundª° in¹ him, behold,¹ they [are] writtenª° in¹ the bookª of the kingsª of Israelª and Judah:ª and Jehoiachinª his sonª reignedª° in his stead.¹" {2Ch 36:8} + "Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORDª concerning¹ Jehoiakimª the sonª of Josiahª kingª of Judah;ª They shall not¹ lamentª° for him, [saying], Ahª my brother!ª or, Ahª sister!ª they shall not¹ lamentª° for him, [saying], Ahª lord!ª or, Ahª his glory!ª ... He shall be buriedª° with the burialª of an ass,ª drawnª° and cast forthª° beyondª¹ the gatesª of Jerusalem.ª" {Jer 22:18-19} + "Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORDª of¹ Jehoiakimª kingª of Judah;ª He shall have¹ none¹ to sitª° upon¹ the throneª of David:ª and his dead bodyª shall be¹ cast outª° in the dayª to the heat,ª and in the nightª to the frost.ª" {Jer 36:30}
