- Riblah:
- Theodoret (in "The wordª of the LORDª which¹ came¹ to¹ Jeremiahª the prophetª against¹ the Gentiles;ª ... Fearª° thou¹ not,¹ O Jacobª my servant,ª saithª° the LORD:ª for¹ I¹ [am] with¹ thee; for¹ I will makeª° a full endª of all¹ the nationsª whither¹¹ I have drivenª° thee: but I will not¹ makeª° a full endª of thee, but correctª° thee in measure;ª yet will I not¹ leave thee whollyª° unpunished.ª°" {Jer 46:1-28}), expressly affirms that Riblah or Reblatha was in his time called Emesa. Κωμη δε εστιν η Ρεβλαθα της νυν καλουμενης Εμεσης. Emesa was a city of Syria, situated on the Orontes, and, according to the Antonine Itinerary, 18 miles from Laodicea ad Libanum. It is now called Homs, or Hems, about eight hours, or twenty-four miles se of Hamah or Hamath, in the road to Damascus. The present town only occupies about one quarter of the space contained within the ancient walls, which apparently date from the time of the Saracens. Here is nothing remarkable, except a Roman sepulchre, and a large castle in ruins. "So they tookª°¹ the king,ª and brought him upª°¹ to¹ the kingª of Babylonª to Riblah;ª and they gaveª° judgmentª upon¹ him." {2Kg 25:6} + "And the coastª shall go downª° from Shephamª¹ to Riblah,ª on the east sideª¹ of Ain;ª and the borderª shall descend,ª° and shall reachª° unto¹ the sideª of the seaª of Chinnerethª eastward:ª" {Num 34:11} + "But the Chaldeans'ª armyª pursuedª° afterª them, and overtookª°¹ Zedekiahª in the plainsª of Jericho:ª and when they had takenª° him, they brought him upª° to¹ Nebuchadnezzarª kingª of Babylonª to Riblahª in the landª of Hamath,ª where he gaveª° judgmentª upon¹ him. ... Then the kingª of Babylonª slewª°¹ the sonsª of Zedekiahª in Riblahª before his eyes:ª also the kingª of Babylonª slewª° all¹ the noblesª of Judah.ª" {Jer 39:5-6} + "Then they tookª°¹ the king,ª and carried him upª° unto¹ the kingª of Babylonª to Riblahª in the landª of Hamath;ª where he gaveª° judgmentª upon¹ him. ... And the kingª of Babylonª slewª°¹ the sonsª of Zedekiahª before his eyes:ª he slewª° also¹¹ all¹ the princesª of Judahª in Riblah.ª" {Jer 52:9-10} + "So Nebuzaradanª the captainª of the guardª tookª° them, and brought²°¹ them to¹ the kingª of Babylonª to Riblah.ª ... And the kingª of Babylonª smoteª° them, and put them to deathª° in Riblahª in the land²¹ of Hamath.ª Thus Judahª was carried away captiveª° out of¹¹ his own land.²¹" {Jer 52:26-27}
