{2 Kings 21:13} And I will stretch 5186 z8804 over x5921 Jerusalem 3389 x853 the line 6957 of Samaria, 8111 and the plummet 4949 of the house 1004 of Ahab: 256 and I will wipe 4229 z8804 x853 Jerusalem 3389 as x834 [a man] wipeth 4229 z8799 x853 a dish, 6747 wiping 4229 z8804 [it], and turning 2015 z8804 [it] upside down. 6440 x5921
I will stretch:
This metaphor is taken from the custom of using a line in measuring land, and in dividing portions of it among several persons. Samaria was taken, pillaged, and ruined, and its inhabitants carried into captivity: Jerusalem shall have the same measure. "In the ninthª yearª of Hosheaª the kingª of Assyriaª tookª°¹ Samaria,ª and carried²° Israel² awayª°¹¹ into Assyria,ª and placedª° them in Halahª and in Haborª [by] the riverª of Gozan,ª and in the citiesª of the Medes.ª" {2Kg 17:6} + "For¹ though¹ thy peopleª Israelª be¹ as the sandª of the sea,ª [yet] a remnantª of them shall return:ª° the consumptionª decreedª° shall overflowª° with righteousness.ª" {Isa 10:22} + "Judgmentª also will I layª° to the line,ª and righteousnessª to the plummet:ª and the hailª shall sweep awayª° the refugeª of lies,ª and the watersª shall overflowª° the hiding place.ª" {Isa 28:17} + "But the cormorantª and the bitternª shall possessª° it; the owlª also and the ravenª shall dwellª° in it: and he shall stretch outª° upon¹ it the lineª of confusion,ª and the stonesª of emptiness.ª" {Isa 34:11} + "The LORDª hath purposedª° to destroyª° the wallª of the daughterª of Zion:ª he hath stretched outª° a line,ª he hath not¹ withdrawnª° his handª from destroying:ª°¹ therefore he made the rampartª and the wallª to lament;ª° they languishedª° together.ª" {Lam 2:8} + "Thou hast walkedª° in the wayª of thy sister;ª therefore will I giveª° her cupª into thine hand.ª ... Thou shalt even drinkª° it and suck [it] out,ª° and thou shalt breakª° the sherdsª thereof, and pluck offª° thine own breasts:ª for¹ I¹ have spokenª° [it], saithª° the Lordª GOD.ª" {Ezk 23:31-34} + "Thus¹ he shewedª° me: and, behold,¹ the Lordª stoodª° upon¹ a wallª [made] by a plumbline,ª with a plumblineª in his hand.ª ... And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ me, Amos,ª what¹ seestª° thou?¹ And I said,ª° A plumbline.ª Then saidª° the Lord,ª Behold,¹ I will setª° a plumblineª in the midstª of my peopleª Israel:ª I will not¹ againª° pass¹ by²° them any more:¹" {Ams 7:7-8} + "Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORD;ª I am returnedª° to Jerusalemª with mercies:ª my houseª shall be builtª° in it, saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª and a lineª°² shall be stretched forthª° upon¹ Jerusalem.ª" {Zch 1:16}
the plummet:
"So Jehuª slewª°¹ all¹ that remainedª° of the houseª of Ahabª in Jezreel,ª and all¹ his great men,ª and his kinsfolks,ª° and his priests,ª until¹ he leftª° him none¹ remaining.ª" {2Kg 10:11} + "Behold,¹ I will bringª° evilª upon¹ thee, and will take awayª° thy posterity,ª and will cut offª° from Ahabª him that pissethª° against the wall,ª and him that is shut upª° and leftª° in Israel,ª ... Him that diethª° of Ahabª in the cityª the dogsª shall eat;ª° and him that diethª° in the fieldª shall the fowlsª of the airª eat.ª°" {1Kg 21:21-24}
I will wipe:
I will empty Jerusalem of all its wealth and inhabitants, as truly as a dish turned up and wiped is emptied of its contents. "Therefore,¹ behold,¹ I will bringª° evilª upon¹ the houseª of Jeroboam,ª and will cut offª° from Jeroboamª him that pissethª° against the wall,ª [and] him that is shut upª° and leftª° in Israel,ª and will take awayª° the remnantª of the houseª of Jeroboam,ª as¹ a man taketh awayª° dung,ª till¹ it be all gone.ª°" {1Kg 14:10} + "I will also makeª° it a possessionª for the bittern,ª and poolsª of water:ª and I will sweepª° it with the besomª of destruction,ª° saithª° the LORDª of hosts.ª" {Isa 14:23} + "Behold,¹ I will sendª° and takeª°¹ all¹ the familiesª of the north,ª saithª° the LORD,ª and Nebuchadrezzarª the kingª of Babylon,ª my servant,ª and will bringª° them against¹ this¹ land,ª and against¹ the inhabitantsª° thereof, and against¹ all¹ these¹ nationsª round about,ª and will utterly destroyª° them, and makeª° them an astonishment,ª and an hissing,ª and perpetualª desolations.ª" {Jer 25:9} + "Heap²° on¹ wood,ª kindleª° the fire,ª consumeª° the flesh,ª and spice²° it well,ª¹ and let the bonesª be burned.ª° ... Then setª° it emptyª upon¹ the coalsª thereof, that¹ the brassª of it may be hot,²°¹ and may burn,ª° and [that] the filthinessª of it may be moltenª° in¹ it,² [that] the scumª of it may be consumed.ª°" {Ezk 24:10-11} + "Andª aª mightyª angelª took upª° a stoneª likeª a greatª millstone,ª andª castª° [it] intoª the¹ sea,ª saying,ª° Thusª with violenceª shall²° that greatª cityª Babylonª be thrown down,ª° andª shall be foundª° no more² at all.ª¹ ... Andª the lightª of a candleª shall shineª° no more² at allª¹ inª thee;ª andª the voiceª of the bridegroomª andª of the brideª shall be heardª° no more² at allª¹ inª thee:ª forª thyª merchantsª wereª° the¹ great menª of the¹ earth;ª forª byª thyª sorceriesª were²° allª nationsª deceived.ª°" {Rev 18:21-23}
wiping it, and turning it upside down:
Heb. he wipeth and turneth it upon the face thereof
