the staff:
"Lo,¹ thou trustestª ° in¹ the staffª of this¹ brokenª ° reed,ª on¹ Egypt;ª whereon¹ ¹ if a manª lean,ª ° it will goª ° into his hand,ª and pierceª ° it: so¹ [is] Pharaohª kingª of Egyptª to all¹ that trustª ° in¹ him." {Isa 36:6} + "And all¹ the inhabitantsª ° of Egyptª shall knowª ° that¹ I¹ [am] the LORD,ª because¹ they have been¹ a staffª of reedª to the houseª of Israel.ª ... When they took holdª ° of thee by thy hand,ª thou didst break,ª ° and rendª ° all¹ their shoulder:ª and when they leanedª ° upon¹ thee, thou brakest,ª ° and madest all¹ their loinsª to be at a stand.ª °" {Ezk 29:6-7}

upon Egypt:
"That walkª ° to go downª ° into Egypt,ª and have not¹ askedª ° at my mouth;ª to strengthenª ° themselves in the strengthª of Pharaoh,ª and to trustª ° in the shadowª of Egypt!ª" {Isa 30:2} + "For the Egyptiansª shall helpª ° in vain,ª and to no purpose:ª therefore¹ have I criedª ° concerning this,ª Their² strengthª [is] to sit still.ª" {Isa 30:7} + "Woeª to them that go downª ° to Egyptª for help;ª and stayª ° on¹ horses,ª and trustª ° in¹ chariots,ª because¹ [they are] many;ª and in¹ horsemen,ª because¹ they are very² strong;ª °¹ but they lookª ° not¹ unto¹ the Holy Oneª of Israel,ª neither¹ seekª ° the LORD!ª ... "And the kingª of Assyriaª foundª ° conspiracyª in Hoshea:ª for he had sentª ° messengersª to¹ Soª kingª of Egypt,ª and broughtª ° no¹ presentª to the kingª of Assyria,ª as [he had done] yearª by year:ª therefore the kingª of Assyriaª shut him up,ª ° and boundª ° him in prison.ª ª" {2Kg 17:4} + "They did cryª ° there,¹ Pharaohª kingª of Egyptª [is but] a noise;ª he hath passedª ° the time appointed.ª" {Jer 46:17}
