- Pul:
- Prideaux supposes that this Pul was the father of the famous Sardanapalus, who was called Sardan with his father's name Pul annexed, as was frequent in those times, making Sardanpul: thus Merodach, king of Babylon, was Merodach-Baladan, because he was the son Baladan. This Pul began to reign according to Usher, am 3237, the fifth year of Menahem; and he is supposed to be the same that reigned in Nineveh, when Jonah preached in that city. "And they transgressedª° against the Godª of their fathers,ª and went a whoringª° afterª the godsª of the peopleª of the land,ª whom¹ Godª destroyedª° beforeª¹ them. ... And the Godª of Israelª stirred upª°¹ the spiritª of Pulª kingª of Assyria,ª and the spiritª of Tilgathpilneserª kingª of Assyria,ª and he carried them away,ª° even the Reubenites,ª and the Gadites,ª and the halfª tribeª of Manasseh,ª and broughtª° them unto Halah,ª and Habor,ª and Hara,ª and to the riverª Gozan,ª unto¹ this¹ day.ª" {1Ch 5:25-26} + "Nevertheless¹ the dimnessª [shall] not¹ [be] such as¹ [was] in her vexation,ª whenª at the firstª he lightly afflictedª° the landª of Zebulunª and the landª of Naphtali,ª and afterwardª did more grievously afflictª° [her by] the wayª of the sea,ª beyondª Jordan,ª in Galileeª of the nations.ª" {Isa 9:1}
