there came:
"Then Joabª sentª ° and toldª ° Davidª ¹ all¹ the thingsª concerning the war;ª ... Who¹ smoteª °¹ Abimelechª the sonª of Jerubbesheth?ª did not¹ a womanª castª ° a pieceª of a millstoneª upon¹ him from¹ ¹ the wall,ª that he diedª ° in Thebez?ª why¹ went ye nighª °¹ the wall?ª then sayª ° thou, Thy servantª Uriahª the Hittiteª is deadª ° also.¹" {2Sm 11:18-21} + "Then they sentª ° to¹ Jezebel,ª saying,ª ° Nabothª is stoned,ª ° and is dead.ª °" {1Kg 21:14} + "Andª broughtª ° hisª headª inª a charger,ª andª gaveª ° itª to the¹ damsel:ª andª the¹ damselª gaveª ° itª to her² ¹ mother.ª" {Mrk 6:28}

Lay ye them:
Such barbarities are by no means uncommon in the East. "It has been know to occur," says Mr. Morier, "after the combat was over, that prisoners have been put to death in cold blood, in order that the heads, which are immediately despatched to the king, and deposited in heaps at the place gates, might make a more considerable show."

until the morning:
"His bodyª shall not¹ remain all nightª ° upon¹ the tree,ª but¹ thou shalt in any wise² ° buryª ° him that¹ day;ª (for¹ he that is hangedª ° [is] accursedª of God;)ª that¹ thy landª be not¹ defiled,ª ° which¹ the LORDª thy Godª givethª ° thee [for] an inheritance.ª" {Deu 21:23}
