- this mad fellow:
- It is probable there was something peculiar in the young prophet's manner and address, similar to the vehement actions sometimes used by the prophets when under the Divine influence, which caused the bystanders to use this contemptuous language. "Yea, truthª faileth;ª°¹ and he [that] departethª° from evilª¹ maketh himself a prey:ª° and the LORDª sawª° [it], and it displeasedª²°¹ him that¹ [there was] no¹ judgment.ª" {Isa 59:15} *marg. "The LORDª hath madeª° thee priestª in the stead of¹ Jehoiadaª the priest,ª that ye should be¹ officersª in the houseª of the LORD,ª for every¹ manª [that is] mad,ª° and maketh himself a prophet,ª° that thou shouldest putª° him in¹ prison,ª and in¹ the stocks.ª" {Jer 29:26} + "The daysª of visitationª are come,ª° the daysª of recompenceª are come;ª° Israelª shall knowª° [it]: the prophetª [is] a fool,ª the spiritualª manª [is] mad,ª° for¹ the multitudeª of thine iniquity,ª and the greatª hatred.ª" {Hsa 9:7} + "Andª when his² friendsª¹ heardª° [of it], they went outª° to lay hold²° on¹ him:ª forª they said,ª°² He is beside himself.ª°" {Mrk 3:21} + "Andª manyª ofª themª said,ª° He hathª° a devil,ª andª is mad;ª° whyª hear¹ ye²° him?ª" {Jhn 10:20} + "Thenª certainª philosophersª of the¹ Epicureans,ª andª of the¹ Stoicks,²¹ encounteredª° him.ª Andª someª said,ª° Whatª willªª° thisª babblerª say?ªª° other¹ some, He seemethª° to beª° a setter forthª of strangeª gods:ª becauseª he preachedª° unto themª Jesus,ª andª the¹ resurrection.ª" {Act 17:18} + "Andª as heª thusª spake for himself,ª° Festusª saidª° with a loudª voice,ª Paul,ª thou art beside thyself;ª° muchª learningª doth makeª° theeª mad.ª²" {Act 26:24} + "Weª [are] foolsª for²° Christ's² sake,ª¹ butª yeª [are] wiseª inª Christ;ª weª [are] weak,ª butª yeª [are] strong;ª yeª [are] honourable,ª butª weª [are] despised.ª" {1Co 4:10} + "Forª whetherª we be beside ourselves,ª° [it is] to God:ª or whetherª we be sober,ª° [it is] for your cause.ª" {2Co 5:13}
