- Gird up thy loins:
- As the upper garments of the Orientals were long and flowing, it was indispensably necessary to tuck up the skirts with a girdle about their loins, in order to use any expedition in their work or on a journey. "Then he saidª° to Gehazi,ª Gird upª° thy loins,ª and takeª° my staffª in thine hand,ª and go thy way:²°¹ if¹ thou meetª° any man,ª saluteª° him not;¹ and if¹ anyª saluteª° thee, answer¹ him not¹ again:²° and layª° my staffª upon¹ the faceª of the child.ª" {2Kg 4:29} + "And the handª of the LORDª was¹ on¹ Elijah;ª and he girded upª° his loins,ª and ranª° beforeª Ahabª to¹ the entranceª° of Jezreel.ª" {1Kg 18:46} + "Thou¹ therefore gird upª° thy loins,ª and arise,ª° and speakª° unto¹ them¹ all¹ that¹ I¹ commandª° thee: be not¹ dismayedª° at their faces,ª¹ lest¹ I confoundª° thee beforeª them." {Jer 1:17} + "Let²° yourª loinsª beª° girded about,ª° andª [your] lightsª burning;ª° ... Blessedª [are] thoseª servants,ª whomª the¹ lordª when he comethª° shall findª° watching:ª° verilyª I sayª° unto you,ª thatª he shall gird¹ himself,²° andª make²° themª to sit down to meat,ª° andª will come forthª° and serveª° them.ª" {Lke 12:35-37} + "Whereforeª gird upª° the¹ loinsª of yourª mind,ª be sober,ª° and hopeª° to the endª forª the¹ graceª that is to be broughtª° unto youª atª the revelationª of Jesusª Christ;ª" {1Pe 1:13}
