And it came:
"And Hazaelª said,ª ° But¹ what,¹ [is] thy servantª a dog,ª that¹ he should doª ° this¹ greatª thing?ª And Elishaª answered,ª ° The LORDª hath shewedª ° me that thou [shalt be] kingª over¹ Syria.ª" {2Kg 8:13} + "And he sent,ª ° and brought¹ him in.² ° Now he¹ [was] ruddy,ª [and] withalª of a beautifulª countenance,ª and goodlyª to look to.ª And the LORDª said,ª ° Arise,ª ° anointª ° him: for¹ this¹ [is] he.¹ ... on the morrow:
"He devisethª ° mischiefª upon¹ his bed;ª he setteth² ° himself¹ in¹ a wayª [that is] not¹ good;ª he abhorrethª ° not¹ evil.ª" {Psa 36:4} + "Woeª to them that deviseª ° iniquity,ª and workª ° evilª upon¹ their beds!ª when the morningª is light,ª they practiseª ° it, because¹ it isª in the powerª of their hand.ª" {Mic 2:1}

that he took a thick cloth:
There is a considerable degree of ambiguity in this passage. The pronoun he is generally referred to Hazael; but Dr. Geddes and others are decidedly of the opinion, that we should understand by it Ben-hadad; who, encouraged by the favourable answer of Elisha, as reported by Hazael, adopted a violent remedy to allay the heat of his fever, and put over his face the keever, or fly-net. (See note on "And Michalª tookª °¹ an image,ª and laidª ° [it] in¹ the bed,ª and putª ° a pillowª of goats'ª [hair] for his bolster,ª and coveredª ° [it] with a cloth.ª" {1Sm 19:13}), dipped in water, which suddenly checked the perspiration, and occasioned his death.

so that he died:
"And Jehuª drew a bowª with his fullª ° strength,ª and smoteª °¹ Jehoramª between¹ his arms,ª and the arrowª went outª ° at his heart,ª ¹ and he sunk downª ° in his chariot.ª" {2Kg 9:24} + "And Shallumª the sonª of Jabeshª conspiredª ° against¹ him, and smoteª ° him beforeª the people,ª and slewª ° him, and reignedª ° in his stead.¹ ... Hazael:
