{2 Kings 6:25} And there was x1961 a great 1419 famine 7458 in Samaria: 8111 and, behold, x2009 they besieged 6696 z8802 x5921 it, until x5704 an ass's 2543 head 7218 was x1961 [sold] for fourscore 8084 [pieces] of silver, 3701 and the fourth part 7255 of a cab 6894 of dove's dung 1686 z8675 y3123 y2755 for five 2568 [pieces] of silver. 3701
a great famine:
"And the kingª saidª° unto her, What¹ aileth thee? And she answered,ª° This¹ womanª saidª° unto¹ me, Giveª°¹ thy son,ª that we may eatª° him to day,ª and we will eatª° my sonª to morrow.ª ... So we boiledª°¹ my son,ª and did eatª° him: and I saidª° unto¹ her on the nextª day,ª Giveª°¹ thy son,ª that we may eatª° him: and she hath hidª°¹ her son.ª" {2Kg 6:28-29} + "If¹ we say,ª° We will enterª° into the city,ª then the famineª [is] in the city,ª and we shall dieª° there:¹ and if¹ we sit¹ still²° here,¹ we dieª° also. Now¹ therefore come,²°¹ and let us fallª° unto¹ the hostª of the Syrians:ª if¹ they save us alive,ª° we shall live;ª° and if¹ they killª° us, we shall but die.ª°" {2Kg 7:4} + "And on the ninthª [day] of the [fourth] monthª the famineª prevailedª° in the city,ª and there was¹ no¹ breadª for the peopleª of the land.ª" {2Kg 25:3} + "And Elijahª went²°¹ to shew²° himself¹ unto¹ Ahab.ª And [there was] a soreª famineª in Samaria.ª" {1Kg 18:2} + "Then saidª° I, Ah,ª Lordª GOD!ª behold,¹ the prophetsª sayª° unto them, Ye shall not¹ seeª° the sword,ª neither¹ shall ye have¹ famine;ª but¹ I will giveª° you assuredª peaceª in this¹ place.ª ... Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORDª concerning¹ the prophetsª that prophesyª° in my name,ª and I¹ sentª° them not,¹ yet they¹ say,ª° Swordª and famineª shall not¹ be¹ in this¹ land;ª By swordª and famineª shall those¹ prophetsª be consumed.ª°" {Jer 14:13-15} + "If¹ I go forthª° into the field,ª then behold¹ the slainª with the sword!ª and if¹ I enterª° into the city,ª then behold¹ them that are sickª with famine!ª yea,¹ both¹ the prophetª and¹ the priestª go aboutª° into¹ a landª that they knowª° not.¹" {Jer 14:18} + "Behold¹ the mounts,ª they are comeª° unto the cityª to takeª° it; and the cityª is givenª° into the handª of the Chaldeans,ª that fightª° against¹ it, becauseª¹ of the sword,ª and of the famine,ª and of the pestilence:ª and what¹ thou hast spokenª° is come to pass;¹ and, behold,¹ thou seestª° [it]." {Jer 32:24} + "And in the fourthª month,ª in the ninthª [day] of the month,ª the famineª was soreª° in the city,ª so that there was¹ no¹ breadª for the peopleª of the land.ª" {Jer 52:6}
an ass's head:
If the pieces of silver were drachms, the whole would amount to about 2£ 9s; which was a great price for so mean a part of this unclean animal. "And the LORDª said,ª° Even thus¹ shall the childrenª of Israelª eatª° their defiledª¹ breadª among the Gentiles,ª whither¹¹ I will driveª° them. ... Moreover he saidª° unto¹ me, Sonª of man,ª behold,¹ I will breakª° the staffª of breadª in Jerusalem:ª and they shall eatª° breadª by weight,ª and with care;ª and they shall drinkª° waterª by measure,ª and with astonishment:ª" {Ezk 4:13-16}
dove's dung:
This probably denotes, as Bochart, Scheuchzer, and others suppose, a kind of pulse, or vetches, which the Arabs still call pigeon's dung. "They never," says Dr. Shaw (Travels, p. 140), "constitute a dish by themselves, but are strewed singly as a garnish over cuscasowe, pillowe, and other dishes. They are besides in the greatest repute after they are parched in pans and ovens; then assuming the name leblebby;" and he thinks they were so called from being pointed at one end, and acquiring an ash colour in parching.
