he cut down:
This could have no natural tendency to raise the iron and cause it to swim. It was only a sign, or ceremony, which the prophet chose to employ on the occasion. "And he went forthª° unto¹ the springª of the waters,ª and castª° the saltª in there,¹ and said,ª° Thus¹ saithª° the LORD,ª I have healedª° these¹ waters;ª there shall not¹ be¹ from thence¹¹ any more¹ deathª or barrenª° [land]." {2Kg 2:21} + "But he said,ª° Then bringª° meal.ª And he castª° [it] into¹ the pot;ª and he said,ª° Pour outª° for the people,ª that they may eat.ª° And there was¹ no¹ harmªª in the pot.ª" {2Kg 4:41} + "And he criedª° unto¹ the LORD;ª and the LORDª shewedª° him a tree,ª [which] when he had castª° into¹ the waters,ª the watersª were made sweet:ª° there¹ he madeª° for them a statuteª and an ordinance,ª and there¹ he provedª° them," {Exd 15:25} + "Andª he tookª° himª asideªª fromª the¹ multitude,ª and putª° his²¹ fingersª intoª hisª ears,ª andª he spit,ª° and touchedª° hisª tongue;ª ... Andª looking upª° toª heaven,ª he sighed,ª° andª saithª° unto him,ª Ephphatha,ª that is,ª Be opened.ª°" {Mrk 7:33-34} + "Andª he tookª° the¹ blind manª by the¹ hand,ª and ledª° himª out¹ of² the¹ town;ª andª when he had spitª° onª hisª eyes,ª and put²° his hands² upon¹¹ him,ª he askedª° himª if²° he saw²° ought.ª¹ ... After² that¹ he putª° [his] handsª againª uponª hisª eyes,ª andª madeª° himª look up:ª° andª he was restored,ª° andª sawª° every manª clearly.ª" {Mrk 8:23-25} + "When he had thusª spoken,ª° he spatª° on the ground,ª andª madeª° clayª ofª the¹ spittle,ª andª he anointedª°² the¹ eyesª of the¹ blind manª with the¹ clay,ª ... Andª saidª° unto him,ª Go,ª° washª° inª the¹ poolª of Siloam,ª (whichª is by interpretation,ª° Sent.)ª° He went his wayª° therefore,ª andª washed,ª° andª cameª° seeing.ª°" {Jhn 9:6-7}
the iron:
This was the real miracle; for the gravity of the metal must otherwise still have kept it at the bottom of the river.
