- offered him:
- In cases of great extremity, it was customary in various heathen nations, to offer human sacrifices, and even their own children. This was frequent among the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Scythians, Gauls, Africans, and others; and was the natural fruit of a religious system, which had for the objects of its worship cruel and merciless divinities. The king of Moab, in this case, sacrificed his son to obtain the favour of Chemosh his god, who, being a devil, delighted in blood and murder, and the destruction of mankind. The dearer anything was to them, the more acceptable those idolaters thought the sacrifice, and therefore burnt their children in the fire to their honour. "And he said,ª° Take¹ now²°¹¹ thy son,ª¹ thine onlyª [son]¹ Isaac,ª whom¹ thou lovest,ª° and get¹ thee²° into¹ the landª of Moriah;ª and offer¹ him²° there¹ for a burnt offeringª upon¹ oneª of the mountainsª which¹ I will tellª° thee of.¹" {Gen 22:2} + "And Abrahamª lifted upª°¹ his eyes,ª and looked,ª° and behold¹ behindª [him] a ramª caughtª° in a thicketª by his horns:ª and Abrahamª went²°¹ and tookª°¹ the ram,ª and offered him upª° for a burnt offeringª in the stead² of¹ his son.ª" {Gen 22:13} + "Thou shalt not¹ doª° so¹ unto the LORDª thy God:ª for¹ every¹ abominationª to the LORD,ª which¹ he hateth,ª° have they doneª° unto their gods;ª for¹ even¹¹ their sonsª and their daughtersª they have burntª° in the fireª to their gods.ª" {Deu 12:31} + "Then it shall be,¹ that whatsoever²°¹ cometh forthª° of the doorsª¹ of my houseª to meetª° me, when I returnª° in peaceª from the childrenª¹ of Ammon,ª shall surely be¹ the LORD'S,ª and I will offer it upª° for a burnt offering.ª" {Jdg 11:31} + "And it came to pass¹ at the endª¹ of twoª months,ª that she returnedª° unto¹ her father,ª who didª° with her [according] to¹ his vowª which¹ he had vowed:ª° and she¹ knewª° no¹ man.ª And it was¹ a customª in Israel,ª" {Jdg 11:39} + "Yea, they sacrificedª°¹ their sonsª and their daughtersª unto devils,ª ... And shedª° innocentª blood,ª [even] the bloodª of their sonsª and of their daughters,ª whom¹ they sacrificedª° unto the idolsª of Canaan:ª and the landª was pollutedª° with blood.ª" {Psa 106:37-38} + "Moreover thou hast takenª°¹ thy sonsª and thy daughters,ª whom¹ thou hast borneª° unto me, and these hast thou sacrificedª° unto them to be devoured.ª° [Is this] of¹ thy whoredomsª a small matter,ª" {Ezk 16:20} + "Will the LORDª be pleasedª° with thousandsª of rams,ª [or] with ten thousandsª of riversª of oil?ª shall I giveª° my firstbornª [for] my transgression,ª the fruitª of my bodyª [for] the sinª of my soul?ª" {Mic 6:7}
