- Some, with Parkhurst, would render the original, bairachta elohim wamailech, "Thou hast blessed the gods and Molech;" a sense, however, which seems extremely forced, and is not acknowledged by any of the ancient versions, though the LXX and Vulgate render bairachta by ευλογησε, benedixit, "blessed." It is no unusual thing for a word to have opposite senses. "Thou shalt not¹ revileª° the gods,ª nor¹ curseª° the rulerª of thy people.ª" {Exd 22:28} + "And thou shalt speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª saying,ª° Whosoeverª¹ cursethª²° his Godª shall bearª° his sin.ª" {Lev 24:15} + "Nowª the¹ chief priests,ª andª elders,ª andª allª the¹ council,ª soughtª° false witnessª againstª Jesus,ª toª put²° him² to death;ª°¹ ...
