{1 Kings 21:2} And Ahab 256 spake 1696 z8762 unto x413 Naboth, 5022 saying, 559 z8800 Give 5414 z8798 me x853 thy vineyard, 3754 that I may have x1961 it for a garden 1588 of herbs, 3419 because x3588 it x1931 [is] near y7138 unto 681 x7138 my house: 1004 and I will give 5414 z8799 thee for x8478 it a better 2896 vineyard 3754 than x4480 it; [or], if x518 it seem good y2896 to thee, 5869 x2895 I will give 5414 z8799 thee the worth 4242 of it x2088 in money. 3701
Give me:
The request of Ahab, at first view, appears fair and honourable. But, as he most evidentially wished Naboth to alienate it finally, which was expressly forbidden and provided against in the law of God ("And if¹ thou sellª° oughtª unto thy neighbour,ª or¹ buyestª° [ought] of thy neighbour's² hand,ª¹¹ ye shall not¹ oppressª° oneª¹ another:ª ... But if¹ heª be not ableª¹¹ to restoreª²°° [it] to him, then that which is soldª shall remain¹ in the handª of him that hath boughtª° it until¹ the yearª of jubile:ª and in the jubileª it shall go out,ª° and he shall returnª° unto his possession.ª" {Lev 25:14-28}), it was high iniquity in Ahab to tempt him to do it, and to covet it showed the depravity of his soul. "And when the womanª sawª° that¹ the treeª [was] goodª for food,ª and that¹ itª [was] pleasantª to the eyes,ª and a treeª to be desiredª° to make [one] wise,ª° she tookª° of the fruit¹¹ thereof,² and did eat,ª° and gaveª° alsoª unto her husbandª with¹ her; and he did eat.ª°" {Gen 3:6} + "Thou shalt not¹ covetª° thy neighbour'sª house,ª thou shalt not¹ covetª° thy neighbour'sª wife,ª nor his manservant,ª nor his maidservant,ª nor his ox,ª nor his ass,ª nor any thing¹ that¹ [is] thy neighbour's.ª" {Exd 20:17} + "Neither¹ shalt thou desireª° thy neighbour'sª wife,ª neither¹ shalt thou covetª° thy neighbour'sª house,ª his field,ª or his manservant,ª or his maidservant,ª his ox,ª or his ass,ª or any¹ [thing] that¹ [is] thy neighbour's.ª" {Deu 5:21} + "And he will takeª° your fields,ª and your vineyards,ª and your oliveyards,ª [even] the bestª [of them], and giveª° [them] to his servants.ª" {1Sm 8:14} + "But¹ thine eyesª and thine heartª [are] not¹ but for¹¹¹ thy covetousness,ª and for¹ to shedª° innocentª blood,ª and for¹ oppression,ª and for¹ violence,ª to doª° [it]." {Jer 22:17} + "Woeª to him that covetethª° an evilª covetousnessª to his house,ª that he may setª° his nestª on high,ª that he may be deliveredª° from the powerª¹ of evil!ª ... For¹ the stoneª shall cry outª° of the wall,ª¹ and the beam¹ out² of the timberª¹ shall answerª° it." {Hab 2:9-11} + "Andª he saidª° untoª them,ª Take heed,ª° andª bewareª° ofª covetousness:ª forª a man'sª² lifeª consistethª° notª in² the abundanceª° ofª the things which he² possesseth.ª°¹" {Lke 12:15} + "Butª they that willª° be richª° fallª° intoª temptationª andª a snare,ª andª [into] manyª foolishª andª hurtfulª lusts,ª whichª drownª° menª inª destructionª andª perdition.ª" {1Tm 6:9} + "Butª every manª is tempted,ª° when he is drawn awayª° ofª his ownª lust,ª andª enticed.ª° ... Thenª when lustª hath conceived,ª° it bringeth forthª° sin:²¹ andª sin,ª when it is finished,ª° bringeth forthª° death.ª" {Jms 1:14-15}
a garden of herbs:
"But when Ahaziahª the kingª of Judahª sawª° [this], he fledª° by the wayª of the gardenª house.ª And Jehuª followedª° afterª him, and said,ª° Smiteª° him also¹ in¹ the chariot.ª [And they did so] at the going upª to Gur,ª which¹ [is] by¹ Ibleam.ª And he fledª° to Megiddo,ª and diedª° there.¹" {2Kg 9:27} + "For¹ the land,ª whither¹¹ thou¹ goest inª° to possessª° it, [is] not¹ as the landª of Egypt,ª from whence¹¹¹ ye came out,ª° where¹ thou sowedstª°¹ thy seed,ª and wateredstª° [it] with thy foot,ª as a gardenª of herbs:ª" {Deu 11:10} + "I madeª° me gardensª and orchards,ª and I plantedª° treesª in them of all¹ [kind of] fruits:ª" {Ecc 2:5} + "A fountainª of gardens,ª a wellª of livingª waters,ª and streamsª° from¹ Lebanon.ª" {Sgs 4:15}
seem good to thee:
Heb. be good in thine eyes, "But Abramª saidª° unto¹ Sarai,ª Behold,¹ thy maidª [is] in thy hand;ª doª° to her as it pleaseth¹¹ thee.²² And when Saraiª dealt hardly¹ with²° her, she fledª° from her face.ª¹" {Gen 16:6} + "But the thingª displeasedªª° Samuel,ª when¹ they said,ª° Giveª° us a kingª to judgeª° us. And Samuelª prayedª° unto¹ the LORD.ª" {1Sm 8:6} + "Then Achishª calledª°¹ David,ª and saidª° unto¹ him, Surely, [as] the LORDª liveth,ª thou¹ hast been upright,ª and thy going outª° and thy coming inª° with¹ me in the hostª [is] goodª in my sight:ª for¹ I have not¹ foundª° evilª in thee since the dayª¹ of thy comingª° unto¹ me unto¹ this¹ day:ª nevertheless the lordsª¹ favourª thee¹ not.²¹" {1Sm 29:6}
