- So he made a covenant:
- One of the conditions of this covenant, we learn, was, that Ahab should have "streets (chutzoth) in Damascus;" a proposal better relished by Ahab then understood by the generality of commentators. This, however, is well illustrated by Mr. Harmer, from William of Tyre, the great historian of the Crusades; from whom it appears that it was customary to give those nations which were engaged in them, churches, streets, and great jurisdiction therein, in those places which they assisted to conquer. The Genoese and Venetians had each a street in Acon, or Acre, in which they had their own jurisdiction, with liberty to have an oven, mill, baths, weights, and measures, etc. "And he saidª° unto¹ him, Thus¹ saithª° the LORD,ª Because¹ thou hast let goª° out of [thy] handª¹¹ a manª whom I appointed to utter destruction,ª therefore thy lifeª shall go¹ for¹ his life,ª and thy peopleª for¹ his people.ª" {1Kg 20:42} + "But the kingª of Syriaª commandedª°¹ his¹ thirtyª and twoª captains² that had rule over¹ his¹ chariots,ª saying,ª° Fightª° neither¹ with¹ smallª nor great,ª save¹¹ only¹ with¹ the kingª of Israel.ª" {1Kg 22:31} + "Now the kingª of Syriaª had commandedª°¹ the captainsª of the chariotsª that¹ [were] with him, saying,ª° Fightª° ye not¹ with¹ smallª or¹ great,ª save¹¹ only¹ with¹ the kingª of Israel.ª" {2Ch 18:30} + "Sayª° ye not,¹ A confederacy,ª to all¹ [them to] whom¹ this¹ peopleª shall say,ª° A confederacy;ª neither¹ fearª° ye their fear,ª nor¹ be afraid.ª°" {Isa 8:12} + "Let favour be shewedª° to the wicked,ª [yet] will he notª learnª° righteousness:ª in the landª of uprightnessª will he deal unjustly,ª° and will notª beholdª° the majestyª of the LORD.ª" {Isa 26:10}
