- every mouth:
- Idolaters often kissed their hand in honour of their idols; and hence the origin of adoration from ad, to and os, oris, the mouth. Cicero mentions a statue of Hercules, the chin and lips of which were considerably worn by the kissing of his worshippers. "And my heartª hath been secretlyª enticed,ª° or my mouthª hath kissedª° my hand:ª" {Job 31:27} + "Kissª° the Son,ª lest¹ he be angry,ª° and ye perishª° [from] the way,ª when¹ his wrathª is kindledª° but a little.ª Blessedª [are] all¹ they that put their trustª° in him." {Psa 2:12} + "And now¹ they sinª° more and more,ª° and have madeª° them molten imagesª of their silver,ª¹ [and] idolsª according to their own understanding,ª all¹ of it the workª of the craftsmen:ª they¹ sayª° of them, Let the menª that sacrificeª° kissª° the calves.ª" {Hsa 13:2}
