wilderness of Damascus:
The wilderness of Damascus seems to have been that part of Arabia Deserta which lay on the south-east of that city, and east of the Trachonites, or the Djebel Haouran and El Ledja; at which the prophet could arrive without meeting Jezebel or any of his enemies. "And he divided² ° himself¹ against¹ them, he¹ and his servants,ª by night,ª and smoteª ° them, and pursuedª ° them unto¹ Hobah,ª which¹ [is] on the left handª ¹ of Damascus.ª" {Gen 14:15} + "And Elishaª cameª ° to Damascus;ª and Benhadadª the kingª of Syriaª was sick;ª ° and it was toldª ° him, saying,ª ° The manª of Godª is comeª ° hither.ª ¹" {2Kg 8:7} + "And desiredª ° ofª himª lettersª toª Damascusª toª the¹ synagogues,ª thatª ifª he foundª ° anyª of this¹ way,ª whetherª they were² ° menª orª women,ª he might bring¹ them² ° boundª ° untoª Jerusalem.ª ... anoint:
