- mount Carmel:
- Mount Carmel is situated north of Dora and south of Ptolemais or Acre, from which it is distant, according to Josephus, 120 stadia, or, according to Thevenot, 10 miles; one of its principal points advancing considerably into the Mediterranean, and forming an elevated promontory. It is described as a flattened cone, about 2,000 feet (some say 1,500) in height, very rocky, its sides steep and rugged, and the soil neither deep nor rich. Capt. Mangles says its is now quite barren, though at the north-eastern foot of it there are some pretty olive-grounds. "So Ahabª went upª° to eatª° and to drink.ª° And Elijahª went upª° to¹ the topª of Carmel;ª and he cast himself downª° upon the earth,ª and putª° his faceª between¹ his knees,ª ... And saidª° to¹ his servant,ª Go upª° now,¹ lookª° towardª the sea.ª And he went up,ª° and looked,ª° and said,ª° [There is] nothing.ª¹ And he said,ª° Go againª° sevenª times.ª" {1Kg 18:42-43} + "And Alammelech,ª and Amad,ª and Misheal;ª and reachethª° to Carmelª westward,ª and to Shihorlibnath;ª" {Jsh 19:26} + "And when Samuelª rose earlyª° to meetª° Saulª in the morning,ª it was toldª° Samuel,ª saying,ª° Saulª cameª° to Carmel,ª and, behold,¹ he set him upª° a place,ª and is gone about,ª° and passed on,ª° and gone downª° to Gilgal.ª" {1Sm 15:12} + "And he went²°¹ from thence¹¹ to¹ mountª Carmel,ª and from thence¹¹ he returnedª° to Samaria.ª" {2Kg 2:25} + "[As] I¹ live,ª saithª° the King,ª whose nameª [is] the LORDª of hosts,ª Surely¹ as Taborª [is] among the mountains,ª and as Carmelª by the sea,ª [so] shall he come.ª°" {Jer 46:18} + "And he said,ª° The LORDª will roarª° from Zion,ª¹ and utterª° his voiceª from Jerusalem;ª¹ and the habitationsª of the shepherdsª° shall mourn,ª° and the topª of Carmelª shall wither.ª°" {Ams 1:2} + "And though¹ they hide²° themselves¹ in the topª of Carmel,ª I will searchª° and take¹ them out²° thence;¹¹ and though¹ they be hidª° from¹¹ my sightª in the bottomª of the sea,ª thence¹¹ will I commandª°¹ the serpent,ª and he shall biteª° them:" {Ams 9:3}
