- there was war:
- Instead of Rehoboam fourteen manuscripts, the Arabic, and some copies of the Targum, read Abijam. The Syriac has "Abia, the son of Rehoboam;" and the Editio Princeps of the Vulgate has Abia. This is doubtless the true reading, as otherwise it would be an unnecessary repetition of "And there was¹ warª between¹ Rehoboamª and Jeroboamª all¹ [their] days.ª" {1Kg 14:30}, and a repetition which interrupts the history of Abijah. (See note on "And Abijahª setª°¹ the battleª in array²° with an armyª of valiant menª of war,ª [even] fourª hundredª thousandª chosenª° men:ª Jeroboamª also set the battle² in arrayª°¹ against¹ him with eightª hundredª thousandª chosenª° men,ª [being] mighty menª of valour.ª" {2Ch 13:3}, etc.) "And there was¹ warª between¹ Rehoboamª and Jeroboamª all¹ [their] days.ª" {1Kg 14:30}
