- Tirzah:
- Tirzah was a city of Ephraim, to which tribe Jeroboam belonged; and appears to have been pleasantly situated, as it is said in "Thou¹ [art] beautiful,ª O my love,ª as Tirzah,ª comelyª as Jerusalem,ª terribleª as [an army] with banners.²°¹" {Sgs 6:4}, "Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah," though its precise situation cannot now be ascertained. It seems to have been the royal city, and the seat of government for a long time after the revolt of the ten tribes, till Omri built Samaria. "And it came to pass,¹ when Baashaª heardª° [thereof], that he left offª° buildingª°¹ of¹ Ramah,ª and dweltª° in Tirzah.ª" {1Kg 15:21} + "In the thirdª yearª of Asaª kingª of Judahª began Baashaª the sonª of Ahijahª to reignª° over¹ all¹ Israelª in Tirzah,ª twentyª and fourª years.ª" {1Kg 15:33} + "So Baashaª sleptª° with¹ his fathers,ª and was buriedª° in Tirzah:ª and Elahª his sonª reignedª° in his stead.¹" {1Kg 16:6} + "In the twentyª² and sixthª yearª of Asaª kingª of Judahª began Elahª the sonª of Baashaª to reignª° over¹ Israelª in Tirzah,ª two years.ª ... And his servantª Zimri,ª captainª of halfª [his] chariots,ª conspiredª° against¹ him, as he¹ was in Tirzah,ª drinkingª° himself drunkª in the houseª of Arzaª steward¹ of [his] houseª in Tirzah.ª" {1Kg 16:8-9} + "In the twentyª² and seventhª yearª of Asaª kingª of Judahª did Zimriª reignª° sevenª daysª in Tirzah.ª And the peopleª [were] encampedª° against¹ Gibbethon,ª which¹ [belonged] to the Philistines.ª" {1Kg 16:15} + "In the thirtyª² and firstª yearª of Asaª kingª of Judahª began Omriª to reignª° over¹ Israel,ª twelveªª years:ª sixª yearsª reignedª° he in Tirzah.ª" {1Kg 16:23} + "The kingª of Tirzah,ª one:ª all¹ the kingsª thirtyª and one.ª" {Jsh 12:24} + "Thou¹ [art] beautiful,ª O my love,ª as Tirzah,ª comelyª as Jerusalem,ª terribleª as [an army] with banners.²°¹" {Sgs 6:4}
