{1 Kings 3:16} Then x227 came 935 z8799 there two 8147 women, 802 [that were] harlots, 2181 z8802 unto x413 the king, 4428 and stood 5975 z8799 before 6440 him.

two women:
"Do not¹ prostituteª °¹ thy daughter,ª to cause her to be a whore;ª ° lest¹ the landª fall to whoredom,ª ° and the landª become fullª ° of wickedness.ª" {Lev 19:29} + "There shall be¹ no¹ whoreª of the daughtersª ¹ of Israel,ª nor¹ a sodomiteª of the sonsª ¹ of Israel.ª" {Deu 23:17} + "And Joshuaª the sonª of Nunª sentª ° out of¹ Shittimª twoª men² ¹ to spyª ° secretly,ª saying,ª ° Go² °¹ viewª °¹ the land,ª even Jericho.ª And they went,² °¹ and came² ° into¹ an harlot'sª °¹ house,ª ² namedª Rahab,ª and lodgedª ° there.¹" {Jsh 2:1}

harlots:
The word zanoth, rendered harlots, is here translated by the Targumist, the best judge in this case, pundekon, "tavern-keepers." See note on "And Joshuaª the sonª of Nunª sentª ° out of¹ Shittimª twoª men² ¹ to spyª ° secretly,ª saying,ª ° Go² °¹ viewª °¹ the land,ª even Jericho.ª And they went,² °¹ and came² ° into¹ an harlot'sª °¹ house,ª ² namedª Rahab,ª and lodgedª ° there.¹" {Jsh 2:1}, and see note on "Now Jephthahª the Gileaditeª was¹ a mighty manª of valour,ª and he¹ [was] the sonª of an harlot:ª ª ° and Gileadª begatª °¹ Jephthah.ª" {Jdg 11:1}. Had these women been harlots, it is not likely that they would have dared to appear before Solomon; nor is it likely that such persons would have been permitted in the reign of David. Their husbands might at this time have been following their necessary occupations in distant parts.
