- the people:
- It was not right to offer sacrifices in any place but where the tabernacle and ark were; and wherever they were, whether on a high place or a plain, sacrifices might be lawfully offered, previously to building of the temple. The tabernacle was now at Gibeon ("So Solomon,ª and all¹ the congregationª with¹ him, went²°¹ to the high placeª that¹ [was] at Gibeon;ª for¹ there¹ was¹ the tabernacleª of the congregationª of God,ª which¹ Mosesª the servantª of the LORDª had madeª° in the wilderness.ª" {2Ch 1:3}), which was therefore called the great high place; whither we find Solomon, without censure, repaired to sacrifice. "And he walked²°¹ in all¹ the waysª of Asaª his father;ª he turned not asideª°¹ from¹ it, doingª° [that which was] rightª in the eyesª of the LORD:ª nevertheless¹ the high placesª were not¹ taken away;ª° [for] the peopleª offeredª° and burnt incenseª° yet¹ in the high places.ª" {1Kg 22:43} + "What² man² soeverª [there be] of the houseª¹ of Israel,ª that¹ killethª° an ox,ª or¹ lamb,ª or¹ goat,ª in the camp,ª or¹ that¹ killethª° [it] out² of¹¹ the camp,ª ... And the priestª shall sprinkleª°¹ the bloodª upon¹ the altarª of the LORDª [at] the doorª of the tabernacleª of the congregation,ª and burnª° the fatª for a sweetª savourª unto the LORD.ª" {Lev 17:3-6} + "And I will destroyª°¹ your high places,ª and cut downª°¹ your images,ª and castª°¹ your carcasesª upon¹ the carcasesª of your idols,ª and my soulª shall abhorª° you." {Lev 26:30} + "Ye shall utterlyª° destroyª°¹ all¹ the places,ª wherein¹¹ the nationsª whichª¹ ye¹ shall possessª° servedª°¹ their gods,ª upon¹ the highª° mountains,ª and upon¹ the hills,ª and under¹ every¹ greenª tree:ª ... But¹¹ unto¹ the placeª which¹ the LORDª your Godª shall chooseª° out of all¹¹ your tribesª to putª°¹ his nameª there,¹ [even] unto his habitationª shall ye seek,ª° and thither¹ thou shalt come:ª°" {Deu 12:2-5} + "Neverthelessª the peopleª did sacrificeª° still¹ in the high places,ª [yet] unto the LORDª their Godª only.¹" {2Ch 33:17}
